Biography of Jean Chretien

Personal

  • 1934: Born in Shawinigan, Quebec.
  • 1957: Married Aline Chaine of Shawinigan and together they have three children.

Education

  • 1955: Received a Bachelors of Arts from St. Joseph Seminary in Trois-Rivieres.
  • 1958: Earned a law degree from Laval University.

Non-Political Career

  • 1958: Called to the bar of Quebec and subsequently joined the law firm of Chretien, Landry, Deschenes, Trudel and Normand, in Shawinigan.
  • 1962-63: Director of the Bar of Trios-Rivieries.
  • 1986-90: Counsel with the law firm of Lang, Michener, Lawrence and Shaw.
  • 1986-90: Senior Advisor with Gordon Capital Group.

Political Career

  • 1963: First elected to the House of Commons.
  • 1965: Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister.
  • 1966: Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance.
  • 1968-74: Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs
  • 1974-76: President of the Treasury Board
  • 1977-79: Minister of Finance.
  • 1980-82: Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada
  • 1980-82: Minister of State (Social Development)
  • 1980-82: Minister Responsible for Constitutional Negotiations.
  • 1982-84: Served as Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources.
  • 1990: Elected leader of the Liberal Party.
  • 1990: Elected the Member of Parliament for Beausejour (New Brunswick)
  • 1993-present: Prime Minister of Canada.
