Canada as a Constitutional MonarchyThe following topics are discussed below:
Constitutional MonarchyCanada’s system of government is modeled largely after Great Britain's government. One of the most important characteristics of the Canadian government is that it is a “constitutional monarchy.” Constitutional monarchy means that a monarchy (a King or Queen) reigns according to the limits imposed by a country’s Constitution. While Canada has a monarch presently, our Constitution and convention places all of the power of the Canadian government into the hands of the Prime Minister and his cabinet. Canada’s constitutional monarchy differs from the American “presidential” system of government. In Canada, the monarch is the head-of-state and the Prime Minister is the head-of-government. Under the American presidential system, the President of the United States is both head-of-state and head-of-government. An Outline of Canadian GovernmentThe following is a general outline of Canada’s political institutions. Officially, Queen Elizabeth II rules Canada. However, the Canadian Constitution and political tradition have taken away all real political power from the Queen. Today, she is merely a symbol of the Canadian government.
