Newfoundland & Labrador Election 2003
By Jay Makarenko
September 30, 2003
Liberal Premier Roger Grimes has called a provincial election in Newfoundland and Labrador
for October 21, 2003. However, the Premier is heading to the polls as the underdog.
The Progressive Conservative Party under Danny Williams is riding high following a September
poll that showed his party with a commanding lead over the Liberals and New Democratic
Party.
All three parties have released their election platforms. The Liberal Party is stressing
increased government spending in areas of healthcare, education and rural development,
while still balancing the budget. The Progressive Conservatives have also promised new
spending initiatives, more efficient and accountable government, and deficit elimination.
The NDP has focused on reforms in education and health, a public automobile insurance
scheme, and the introduction of a new public energy corporation.
