2004 Ontario PC Leadership Contest
By Jay Makarenko
On September 18, 2004, members of the Ontario Progressive Conservative
(PC) Party elected John Tory as their new leader. Mr. Tory won
the leadership on a second ballot victory, defeating Jim Flaherty
and Frank Klees, both elected PC members of the Ontario legislature.
The selection of Mr. Tory may represent a shift to the centre
for the PC Party, as it moves farther away from the conservatism
of Mike Harris.
This Spotlight examines the Ontario PC leadership election. Specific
topics include:
-
- An overview of the procedures by which the Ontario PC Party
selects a new leader.
-
- Biographies and policy positions of each of the candidates.
-
- Official results of the leadership contest, including summaries
of the first and second ballots.
-
- Party debt, shift in party ideology, and recapturing popular
support.
-
- A list of relevant internal and external links.
