Election Report CardHow well are the major political parties doing in the federal election? There are lots of ways to answer this question, such as public opinion polls and newspaper editorials. We decided to take a different approach. We recruited Political Science professors from universities across Canada to grade each party on their campaign. Every week, this panel of experts on Canadian politics will grade and comment on each party's campaign over the previous week. This should provide a good snapshot of the performance of the parties and their leaders over the five weeks of the federal election. Week Five Grades

Week four saw the high-profile leaders' debates in French and in English. Our panel diverged significantly on who did the best in the debates and the campaign overall. Professors Lachapelle and Bateman gave the highest grades to the BQ, Professor Young thought the week went to the Conservatives, Professor Malloy marked the Liberals highly, and Professor Smith gave his highest grade to the NDP! We were experiencing some technical problems that are preventing us from receiving and posting the grades from one of our panelists for week three. The four panelists we were able to hear from seem to agree that the Liberals and the Conservatives are in a dogfight and that the Conservatives appear to be winning. Click on each of our panelists’ names to see their detailed comments for week three. Check back next week for their grades and comments on week four of the campaign, including the important leaders’ debates.
In week two, the Conservatives showed the most improvement, increasing their average grade to a B+, up from a B the week before. This seems to come at the expense of the Liberals who, besides slipping in the polls, are not impressing our distinguished panel. All four of our panelists ranked the Liberals in last place. The BQ continues to hold its ground with a solid campaign. The NDP is continuing to maintain its level of performance as well. Click on each professor’s name to see his or her detailed comments.
Our panel of professors has graded the parties and, so far, the winner appears to be the Bloc. Overall, the Liberals are getting a passing grade, but our panelists seem to agree that their campaign is not particularly effective. Stephen Harper and the Conservatives are getting a solid "B" for the first week from the campaign. The biggest disagreement so far is over the NDP campaign.
