Lisa Young - Week Two Grades

Political Parties

Pass

Bloc Quebecois

Although he receives very little coverage in English Canada, Duceppe has arguably become the most important player in Canadian politics. He has well over fifty seats in Quebec sewn up and that means that he can be the kingmaker on June 29. From the short clips I’ve seen, he’s doing an excellent job of hiding the fact that he doesn’t have a clue what he’ll do if asked to support a Conservative government.

Conservative Party

For the politics component of the grade, Harper gets an A+. He’s running a disciplined campaign that stays on message and is devastating the Liberals. For economics, the grade is more like a C. Surely a man with two degrees in the subject knows that you can’t base your spending plans on the assumption that everything will be rosy for the next four years. Advice for this week: distribute blue duct tape to cover the mouths of all Conservative candidates until June 29.

Liberal Party

The election was Martin’s to lose, and apparently he’s going to do just that. His campaign doesn’t seem able to deliver its message clearly, hasn’t found anything to stand for, and is clearly flailing. Martin knows the wheels are falling off his campaign bus and he looks terrified. Perhaps it’s time to go groveling to some of the people who have run successful Liberal campaigns in the past and beg for assistance.

New Democratic Party

After the initial burst of attention in the first week of the campaign, Layton has been far less visible this week. As long as the polls continue to suggest that he won’t hold the balance of power, Layton will struggle to get media coverage. It’s time for Layton to go after Harper. If he isn’t stopped, he’ll keep the NDP from its best chance in a generation to influence public policy.
