Guy Lachapelle - Week Four Grades
Bloc Quebecois
The
performance of Gilles Duceppe both in French
and English was perceived by Quebecers (journalists,
observers, etc). as unexpected. He seems to
have more experience than the three other leaders.
He is talking about real issues (elderly, poverty,
employment,etc.)
Conservative Party
Harper
made a good impression in Québec. However,
voters are still afraid of the PC platform.
Women's groups especially (in public opinion
polls) see the PC right as to much on the right
side. Harper needs more seats from Ontario.
A possible alliance PC and Bloc? I still think
this is very unlikely. However, if Mr. Harper
is really serious about fundamental reforms
in the federal system - to give more autonomy
to the provinces (use of the opting out formula)
- we might be surprised.
Liberal Party
Very
strange campaign. The Liberals and Mr. Martin
are focusing their campaign on a provincial
issue... health care!!!. Citizens in Quebec
and in the ROC clearly understand the problem.
The money is in Ottawa, the need in the provinces.
There is a fiscal disequilibrium. Everyone
accepts and understand the solution: more money
from Ottawa.
Second
observation: Mr. Martin asked Mr. Chrétien's
organization to help him in the campaign. He
also rehabilitated Stéphane Dion by
sending him in the West to hammer his one line
thought against the separatists. It looks like
Mr. Martin - who wants to differentiate himself
from the "old gang", was rehabilitating
(in the same way as for communist party - China!)
the same people he wanted to kick out from
the PLC. Are we talking about credibility,
integrity and accountability? Are we back to
the old Plan B or does Mr. Martin has a real
Plan A for Quebec and Canada?
Many Liberal candidates have now proclaiming that they are Quebec
nationalists! They are defending Quebec' interest in Ottawa.
Why the change? Because nobody trusts them - in their capacity
to serve citizens' interests - they are now saying that they
were not responsible for the decisions taken by the Liberal cabinet!
Strange life indeed... when you have no ideas to fought for!
New Democratic Party
"Smiling" Jack
Layton seems to simply be happy to be there.
In Quebec, the NDP cannot occupy the BLOC's
field. No room for the NDP.
