on the other hand my budding guitarist wyly jr thought it was great...and then there were those scantily dressed rock groupie wannabe's that show up at every concert...

It seems to me that it's more interesting to be in the presence of an icon, than to actually hear good music - since you can do that on any street corner.

Why would someone spend $85 to see such a thing ?

$85 times 3 actually...why?...for the best reason ever, because mrs wyly said so...
leona boyd was a much better guitar player than santana, I enjoyed her concert($25) can't see her on a street corner...
sarah mclachlan put on 100x better concert than santana, at $50 that was money well spent, she doesn't do street corners either...
santane was probably my last concert unless there is another stones or pink floyd event, they don't do street corners either...

$50 seems reasonable for a top-drawer act. The boomer rockers seem to need more and more money and will gladly soak their appreciating and well-moneyed hippy customers for as much as they can get.
As for your reasons for going - they are sound.

DubFX was 12 bucks, and he put on one hell of a show here in Ottawa a couple weeks back. Price point does not guarantee level of entertainment.
DubFX sounds like something you just plug in and it plays.

Gordon Lightfoot played last June in my area and put on quite the show. I even talked to him after the concert.$85 times 3 actually...why?...for the best reason ever, because mrs wyly said so...

Was it really him, or one of those large cardboard cutouts ?

I guess Carlos was thinking that everyone there had paid $85, so therefore they could easily be talked into things.

I saw Santana in Vancouver a few years ago. It was a great concert...until he started getting political. That ruined it.I want my $85 back

Not to far off the mark. He just plugs is mic into his sampling gear and builds his tracks that way.
