But a source told CBC News that only small sections of the fence would be deployed to protect visiting U.S. navy ships, as security for Canadian navy ships isn't considered as pressing

The 1.6-kilometre fence has been dismantled because it was weighed down by mussels and kelp and battered by waves.

"It's definitely a tricky spot," said Dennis Smith, CEO of Whispr Wave, a New Jersey company that has built similar floating fences for navies around the world.

The orange fence acted as a first line of defence for the destroyers and frigates docked near downtown Halifax, thwarting potential attacks from small boats carrying explosives. Its hard plastic teeth jutted 1.5 metres into the air.

Oh...so you want to play dirty? Okay...I do think US Navy sailors need more protection in Halifax, or they might get stabbed to death while on liberty. So there!

Uh... well, it was kind of a 1/2 compliment I made but ok... And... you play dirty by saying that Halifax is dangerous ?

In any case. I guess my nationalist brothers will demand that we "deploy" the fearsome plastic fence for Canadians only... or somesuch... wait... where was it made again ?

It was for US Navy Petty officer Damon Crooks...stabbed to death in Halifax (2006).

I'm sorry to hear it.

So much for the humour on this thread then.

Bar brawls can be dangerous. Guess he learned that lesson the hard way.

So you think it's funny then?

Do you also think we should give American security priority over everything else Canadian too?

The original story ?

Yes.

Do you also think we should give American security priority over everything else Canadian too?

Well, part of the humour of the original story is that it's pretty difficult to figure out what they're talking about. What kind of navy "deploys" a "fence". Is a fence a kind of boat I've never heard of ?

No...it is called a port security barrier, like this:

It is a standoff barrier for surface threats like that experienced by the USS Cole in Yemen.

Ok. Clearly I'm on this thread for the wrong reasons. I have nothing to add.

That is indeed a shame. Still, crime happens everywhere. Canadians have been killed while in the US, or any other country, for that matter.

My father was Canadian navy and had nothing but wonderful treatment in American ports. He particularly loved to visit Buffalo, NY, or more properly Niagara Falls, NY. As a Canadian sailor came down the gangway there would be a herd of taxis driven by black folks. They would ask "What time do you have to be back?". They would then take Canadian sailors like my father to THEIR part of town, showing them a great time and buying them innumerable beers. No matter how drunk the Canadian sailor got, he would be gotten back to his ship on time!

This treatment stemmed from over a century past, with Canada being the end of the Underground Railroad to get slaves to Canada and freedom. Those people never forgot! This was the 50's and I don't know if the custom continues today but my father thoroughly enjoyed himself and deeply appreciated the friendly, generous treatment.

I'm fuming. Let's invade the United States of America.

Since I live in Halifax, I can tell you the fence it normally up and around the Navy yard. They also have an armed patrol boat to give added protection. The nets are only so long, so when a ship comes into port they have to make adjustments, which might mean leaving one ship un-netted. The buffer between the ships and the net is pretty big when they are up.
