And by such reasoning, leftists believe that Walmart is a successful business because of advertising.

IOW, with a large advertising budget, sophisticated focus group analysis and a popular slogan well-placed, Leftists (like Gosplan bureaucrats) believe that Walmart and other corporate managers can change people, and control the world.

If marketing doesn't work, then why budget for it?

Truth is it does change people's perceptions of things and influences people, as opposed to your snide and sarcastic quip "control the world."

Its funny that you are using the example of walmart?

Walmart are very anti union scabs?

The left never looks up to Walmart! And I make it a point to do very little shopping there!

You are clearly an NDP partisan, so may I ask who you supported or will support in the leadership?

Check my comments on the NDP leadership thread!

If marketing works, then why did the Soviet Union fail?

The Soviets had the most extensive marketing/advertising/propaganda campaign ever executed. And yet, the Soviet Union failed.

They don't need to fool all of the people. They only need to fool about 25% of the people, since that's all it takes to get a majority government with 60% voter turnout.

In any case, if I accept your premise, you should be furious that the Tories spent so much money on an ad campaign that is ultimately useless.

I'd like to see some conservatives try and justify this...

I don't have a problem with the ad itself as long as it's promoting "Canada's Economic Action Plan" and it's coming from the government and not the Conservative Party. Their rationale is likely that the ads were made to instill confidence in the Canadian economy. It's the media who is characterizing it as a propaganda for Flaherty's budget, making it sound clearly partisan. That probably sells more papers than an calling it propaganda for the economy.

The media buy was higher than required in any event. It always is when the government advertises. There's a lot of waste because governments don't purchase media like a business would. If they advertise in the Herald, they're going to advertise in the Sun, whether it makes sense or not. And they'll advertise in every province, whether it makes sense or not.

So Cybercoma, you believe that the Conservatives "fooled" enough people to get elected.

Underneath all, that's the problem with the "Robocall scandal". Many people (eg. Cybercoma) simply cannot accept that Harper is PM, and the Conservatives have a majority.

----

Sorry, cybercoma, if a political party/politician fooled anyone, it was the NDP/Bloc/PQ and Liberals who did the fooling over the past 50 years or so. Leftists want to have bigger governments, and more bureaucrats.

It sounds good on paper to let the State manage our affairs for the good of all. Yet, it just doesn't work in practice.

Canadian and Quebec voters are now more cynical. Like Soviet citizens in the 1980s, they are looking for alternatives.

What does this have to do with robocalls? Since the Conservatives have a majority, we should just ignore electoral fraud? What nonsense.

I love how you say this with a straight face when Stephen Harper has created one of the largest Cabinets in Canadian history. Meanwhile, provincial NDP governments have the best record at balancing budgets and creating surpluses. The NDP is also the only party that is the same between the federal and provincial levels.
It sounds good on paper to let the State manage our affairs for the good of all. Yet, it just doesn't work in practice.
Here you continue to ignore the fact that the earliest state welfare systems in the West were implemented by political conservatives in Germany. During the Depression, governments realized that the economy cannot be left to its own devices because it will not recover on its own and that stability is not possible with that kind of misery and suffering through joblessness. Rightwingers like you have absolutely no problem proclaiing that people should vote for your parties because they are the best at managing the economy, whilst turning around and trying to chastise the Left for State management. You say it doesn't work in practice, but it does. State intervention is the only reason we got out of the depression. It's the reason people can go to the doctor when they get sick here. It's the reason products have to be designed in a way that won't injure you or destroy your property. It's the reason you don't take your life into your hands when you buy food at the grocery store or in a restaurant. It's the reason we don't have poisoned waterways and toxic air. It's the reason we have one of the best educated nations in the OECD. It's the reason, in Montreal especially, that you don't have mountains of garbage piled up on the streets. Does the state manage our affairs? Of course it does and it does that so we can live in a community together.
