It's diplomacy by paint by numbers, courtesy of Barack Obama. Just fill in the blank of country and/or leader and you're all set!

Every president says that every visiting leader is a strong ally. Every once in a while the press in the US pay attention to a foreign leader visiting and read way too much into it. Remember the 'France is the US's strongest ally?' talk from not that long ago?

I take this as a sign that his diplomatic efforts are generally going well since this isn't really much of an attack.

I love how you used to get bent out of shape about people criticizing Bush. Yet, I don't think you've made a single post in 4 years that doesn't bash Obama.

Rhetoric from politicians. Run-of-the-mill stuff in my book. Everyone is a close ally when they are standing next to you.

When the sh*t hits the fan, that's when you find out who are your close allies.

http://m.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/espionage-case-may-have-done-grave-injury-to-ties-with-allies/article2369678/?service=mobile

The case of a naval intelligence officer accused of leaking classified military documents to a foreign adversary has done significant damage to Ottawa's treasured intelligence-sharing relationships with key allies, sources say.

The fallout has been an extraordinarily sensitive topic for the federal government since January, when a Canadian Forces sailor was arrested for espionage and reports surfaced that some Russian diplomats were asked to go back to Moscow.

Some sources characterize the damage – particularly to relations with the United States – as grave, while others say they hope bad feelings will blow over. Defence Minister Peter MacKay has said key allies retain “full confidence in Canada.”

Yep. Same as Bush et al. B)

"These diplomatic turns of phrase ... didn't start with Obama. President George W. Bush used similar language to describe countries such as Japan, Canada, Great Britain, and ... France. In 2006, the New York Times noted that then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice had used the ''no better friend'' refrain with no less than Australia, Britain (and the United Kingdom as a whole), Greece, Italy, Japan, Jordan, and Singapore." link
