US Torture Scandal

13 May 2004 - 06:05 PM

One of the reasons I and many others opposed the war in Iraq was the resentment of the US it would enflame.  I've always maintained it is essential for America and the west to maintain the moral high ground.

It's been chipped away since the invasion and this is beyond doubt the most damage done yet.

Here's a little sample of the current situation:

"LEASH GAL'S SEX PIX"

"New Photos worse than expected"

"What we saw is appalling"

How did these people get in the army, where was their training and why was there no supervision or discipline?

Any thoughts.

US Corporations Pay little or no tax

The full story is here:

Is this fair? When politicians are screaming over government waste of tax payers dollars and a lack of resources and money to impliment and maintain various programs how come they don't call on corporations to pick up their fair share?

Any thoughts?

Death Penalty In Sniper Shooting

Some quotes from the defense:

" “I’ve represented guys that you look them in the eye and see evil. I’ve spent a lot of time with John Allen Muhammad and that’s not him.”

Source provided above.

From the Prosecution:

"“I see nothing but pure evil,”

source above.

The judge has ordered that Muhammad be executed on October 14th, 2004.  The appeals process has already begun.

Rather than throwing the man in jail and letting it rest at that the tax payer and the court system will expend millions of dollars and many hours trying to get this man executed or not.  A complete waste of resources I say with no impact on crime rates to boot.

Of course terrorism had to come into play in this case.  I want to know if you believe Muhammad should have been charged under the new anti-terrorism laws in the States.  I say no.

Vancouver Safe Injection Site

02 March 2004 - 07:49 PM

This story was on the CBC Website today:

Vancouver's safe-injection site a concern: UN

Source: http://www.cbc.ca/st...injection040302

I think the whole concept is misguided and offensive.  The government should tackle this problem by focusing resources on prevention first.

Does anyone have any information on the success rates of these injection sites?  By this I mean how many people (Numbers or %) do they break the habit?

It looks like a situation that will breed long term dependency and divert resources from where they could be better spent.
