How does Intelligent Design work?

19 March 2013 - 10:13 AM

Obviously this is aimed at Betsy.  But for anybody, how does it work? Please no links, no freaking videos. Just explain how it works in your own words.  When were humans designed and placed on earth in relation to the age of the earth and how was it done?  Why do we have archaic structures like the appendix?  It seems our eyes are not an optimal design, why not?

1 Question for Betsy

1. How old do you think the earth is?  Science says 4 billion years.  What do you say?

Is #$#^$#^ a religion?

10 February 2013 - 10:33 PM

People come down on two sides of this issue. Some say that #$#^$#^ is a religion because it is a belief that no God exists. Others say that #$#^$#^ is not a religion because it has no moral code, rites, and other elements of religion. I'm with the second group.

I hope this helps, since apparently the term atheism is not the disbelief in God. So I guess the term is #$#^$#^ I mean the concept certainly exists, so we need a term for it.

They love us, they really love us

Canada Cool

Often ignored and taken for granted, Canada is on a roll. From the U.S. point of view, the tail is wagging the dog in North America, and that's not so bad. The economic activity helps both countries.
The key to Canada's success has been avoiding some of the worst mistakes made by its neighbor to the south.
Americans failed to regulate their banks. Canada's banks are stable.
Americans overinflated their real estate market. Canada's housing market never went pop.
Americans can't get their elected officials to straighten out health care and entitlement IOUs. Canada's got it better covered, having kept its debt and spending at more sustainable levels than the U.S.

Of course this is from the limited world view of the US. The Conference board of Canada only gave us a B overall in quality of life, vs Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland Austria got A's. We got D's for working age poverty, right along with US and Japan, which got D's overall as well. http://www.conferenc...ls/society.aspx So as usual, we're doing better than the US, but that's a mean feat. We could do a lot better, get an A next time like the good kids.

Best place to be born.

01 February 2013 - 12:45 PM

The Economist has come up with a list of the best countries in world to be born. Switzerland ranks number one, the usual socialist suspects and Australia make up the other top 5. Canada is only number 9. US is only number 16 tho - ha ha, we beat them again.

People born in Switzerland will tend to be the happiest and have the best quality of life judged in terms of wealth, health and trust in public institutions.

We should be able to do better, IMO, with all we've got. What would it take to move us up? Less income inequality? Our health is pretty good actually. Trust in public institutions would be a big one, IMO. If Switzerland can score high here with 4 official languages and cultures, surely we could learn from them. Their participatory democracy seems worth emulating, except with our vast distances we'd have to do it electronically.
