2002 Canadian Alliance Leadership Election
Printable Version

THE MAIN EVENT

The Canadian Alliance leadership race has begun. There are four candidates contending for the position: ex-leader Stockwell Day, Alliance MP Grant Hill, Alliance MP Diane Ablonczy, and former Reform MP Stephen Harper. The leadership vote will be held by mail-in ballot in March 2002.

Last year, thirteen Alliance MPs, including Deborah Grey and Chuck Strahl, were suspended from caucus for openly calling for Mr. Day's resignation. Many of the dissenters have

subsequently formed the Democratic Representative Association while striking an alliance with Joe Clark's Progressive Conservatives. This political infighting has resulted in financial problems for the party and a number of resignations.

Last summer, the Canadian Alliance caucus, including Day, decided that only a leadership contest would resolve the party's leadership dilemmas. The leadership race was announced in July 2001 and Mr. Day officially stepped down as leader of the party in December 2001. Alliance MP John Reynolds is acting as interim leader until the vote.

The future of the Canadian Alliance is one of the important issues in this race. Mr. Hill and Mrs. Ablonczy are both running on a "unite the right" platform that calls for a coalition between the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives. There has also been controversy between the two front-runners, Stephen Harper and Stockwell Day. Mr. Harper has accused Mr. Day of courting evangelical Christians and of campaigning with a hidden agenda on the abortion issue. Mr. Day's officials have accused Mr. Harper of having ties to an Alberta separatist group.
