Final Thoughts

Like our southern neighbours, Canadians are concerned with domestic security after the events of September 11th. While this concern is valid, Canadians should be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. The concept of Fortress North America represents just such an instance. The idea is enticing: we can keep terrorists out of North America, while still maintaining the mobility of goods and people within the continent. However, it is at the unnecessary and unreasonable cost of Canadian sovereignty. This is not to suggest that Canada should be benign towards North American security, or that it should covet its sovereignty absolutely. It simply asserts that Canada should meet its security needs with prudence.
