Speaker of the House of Commons
The Speaker is a member of the House of Commons, elected to his or her
position by fellow members prior to the opening of each Parliament.
The position is held for the duration of that Parliament. Prior to
1986, the Speaker was nominated by the Prime Minister and seconded by
the Leader of the Opposition. The Speaker is the presiding officer of
all sessions of the House. He or she must follow the standing orders
or rules of the house, and must maintain the rights and privileges of
its members and the House. Furthermore, the Speaker must manage the
financial and administrative concerns of the House of Commons, tending
to budget estimates, and sitting on the Board of Internal Economy for
this purpose.
