The Canada US Softwood Lumber Dispute
By Rhonda Lauret Parkinson
The long simmering softwood lumber dispute between Canada and the
United States is once again threatening to boil over. Disputes
between Canada and the United States over this issue have a long-standing
history – one that dates back to the early 1800s, but that
has more immediate roots in recent times.
Over the years, the dispute has been contested in tribunals at
the international level. Mechanisms designed to deal with trading
disputes between nations, such as those found in the North American
Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the World Trade Organization
(WTO) have provided no relief. Failure to resolve this issue
could potentially have severe and lasting implications for the
Canada-US relationship.
This feature provides an overview of the softwood lumber dispute
between Canada and the United States, including an exploration
of its core issues, a chronology of events, and an understanding
of dispute’s impact for both countries.
