Kananaskis G8 Summit
As host of the 2002 G8 Summit, Canada is giving the African development
issue prominence on the agenda.
In December 2001, Canada announced that it would commit an additional
$500 million for Africa. Canada has also offered enhanced access to its
domestic markets for low-cost African agricultural exports. In March 2002,
during a visit by Prime Minister Chretien to the White House, US President
George W. Bush announced a new $5 billion African development assistance
package.
Led by Canada, the G8 has been working over the last year towards a
broad action plan for African’s New Plan for African Development's (NEPAD)
implementation. The NEPAD includes G8 economic and humanitarian aid, as
well as political reform by African leaders. Canada’s goal for the 2002 G8
Summit is a formal commitment to a fully developed action plan for the
NEPAD.
