Leader BiographiesCanada Prime Minister Jean Chrétien Jean Chretien was born in Shawinigan, Quebec on January 11, 1934. Mr.
Chrétien received a Bachelors of Arts from St. Joseph Seminary in
Trois-Rivieres in 1955, and a law degree from Laval University in
1958. Subsequently, he joined the law firm of Chretien, Landry, Deschenes, Trudel and Normand, in Shawinigan. He also served as
Director of the Bar of Trios-Rivieries in 1962-63. He married Aline
Chaine of Shawinigan in 1957, and together they have two sons and one
daughter.
Mr. Chretien was first elected to the House of Commons in 1963 as the
Member of Parliament for Saint-Maurice-Lafleche (Quebec). Over the
next thirty years, he held several senior posts in Liberal
governments. In June 1990, Mr. Chretien was elected leader of the
Liberal Party. In 1993, the Liberal Party won a majority of the seats
in the House of Commons and Mr. Chretien was sworn in as Prime
Minister of Canada. As Prime Minister, he was re-elected Member of
Parliament in 1997 and 2000. President of the European Commission Romano Prodi (EU)
In 1978 and 1979, Mr. Prodi served as Italy’s Minister of Industry.
Between 1982 and 1989, and in 1993 and 1994, he was president of IRI
(the Italian state-owned industrial reconstruction institute). In
1996, Mr. Prodi served as Italian Prime Minister. In September1999, he
became President of the European Commission. France President Jacques Chirac
Germany Chancellor Gerhard Schröder
In 1977, Mr. Schröder became an executive member of the Social
Democratic Party in the district of Hanover. In 1980, he was elected
to the German parliament. In 1986, he took a seat in the Lower Saxony
state legislature and served as Minister-President of Lower Saxony
from 1990 to 1998. On October 27, 1998, Mr. Schröder was elected
Chancellor of Germany. Italy Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi
Mr. Berlusconi served as Prime Minister for seven months in 1994.
He then served as Opposition Leader for seven years. In 2001, Mr.
Berlusconi again became Prime Minister. Japan Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi
Mr. Koizumi was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1972.
Mr. Koizumi was re-elected 10 consecutive times, during which he held
several senior posts. Mr. Koizumi was confirmed by the National
Legislature as Prime Minister of Japan on April 26, 2001. Russia President Vladimir Putin
In 1998, Mr. Putin was appointed Director of the Federal Security
Service. In 1999, he became Secretary of Russia's Security Council and
then Prime Minister. On March 26, 2000, Mr. Putin was elected
President of Russia. United Kingdom Prime Minister Tony Blair
In 1983, Mr. Blair was elected MP for Sedgefield. In 1997, he became
Prime Minister and was re-elected in 2001. United States President George W. Bush
In 1994, Mr. Bush was elected Governor of Texas and was re-elected in
1998. In 2001, Mr. Bush was elected president of the United States. |
