Role of the G8
The G8 is a forum for member nations to discuss and take action on
global issues that are important to them. At G8 meetings, member nations
are able to:
- Familiarize with each other
- Resolve disputes with one another
- Identify and define common objectives and threats, and set new
policies
The G8 is not a formal international organization such as the United
Nations or World Trade Organization.
- The G8 does not have a permanent staff, headquarters, or budget. The
nation that hosts the Summit in a given year provides the meeting
facilities.
- G8 members voluntarily comply with policies and there are no formal
penalties for failure to meet commitments.
- The G8 is not representative of the world's population. It is
constituted by industrial and market-orientated democracies.
