2006 Liberal Party of Canada Leadership Contest |
2006 Liberal Party of Canada Leadership Contest
On December 2-3, 2006, the Liberal Party of Canada selected Stéphane
Dion as their new party leader. This is the first time since 1990,
when Jean Chrétien was selected leader, that there had been
a highly contested campaign for the Party’s leadership. (At
the Liberal leadership convention in November 2003, it was a foregone
conclusion that Paul Martin would assume the leadership mantle, and
the role of Prime Minister, from Chrétien.) The 2006 decision
was an important one, as the new leader is expected to helm the Party
in a forthcoming federal election, anticipated for as early as Spring
2007. This article provides an extensive link database for information
on the candidates, the latest leadership news, analysis of the campaign,
background information relating to the leadership race, as well as
the final results of the vote.
