  1. Finally!  "Decades of activism have achieved what many said was impossible: nuclear weapons are banned."

Honduras has joined other nations, among them Antigua and Barbuda, Malta and the Cook Islands, to become the 50th country to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons so it will now come into force in 90 days time.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-54680893

It's not all joyous celebration, though.  Comoros, Liechtenstein and Nepal are among those who have not yet put their seal on the deal.

    Still, I feel safer already.

We are at a more dangerous time now than ever. Without the actual agreement of those who possess nuclear weapons, this amounts to a bunch of old hippies caterwauling.

But then, we know about you and the hippies...

I think the real problem is that most people don't realise one doesn't have to pick one or the other.

Horton's cancels "Roll up the Rim"!

    Will this curse never end?

Gloves is to protect the employee - but, what about the clients?

Surely they wouldn't be putting on new gloves for each and every sale?

If no client has ever complained about that unsanitry practice that is done openly - boy, never mind sex education!   Time for a NATIONAL proper sanitation education!

As a veteran of a 1000 Horton's drive through transactions, I can honestly say that has never occurred to me.

      Thanks a lot!

  7. For those who don't get it, the reason people on this forum can't STFU about Muslims is that people on this forum can't help defending egregious and barbaric behaviour.

    It's not that hard.

Honestly, it's like asking why people on this forum can't STFU about Trump.

I think it's more like every day we read or see some new outrageous thing done in the name of "Allah" which wildly contradicts the liberal narrative that Islam is a religion of peace, and that only a tiny fraction of a percent of Muslims believe in the actual words of the Koran.

    3. bcsapper

      bcsapper

Sure, but why would we bother beyond an initial post if the "tiny fraction" narrative were not siezed upon by those uncomfortable with acknowledging that outrageous things are frequently done in the name of Allah?

It's not the Muslims.  It's the Hippies.

Well, in 2017 The Indepent told us that the UK is home to up to 25,000 Islamist extremists who could pose threat, that's no small number, and that's only in the U.K.

  8. It's my first caucus!

    They just misspelled circus, right?

Enormous fun, but I have no idea what's going on.

  11. Just for the record, I think a picture of a sealion is an appropriate response to someone who still insists on evidence for climate change.

That said, does the warning stop me from posting Status Updates?  I was going to post this in there but I couldn't.

It's back.  You can stop worrying about it now and get on with what you were doing.

  12. Any species that still allows fireworks for public celebrations is not one that is about to get serious about climate change.

(I'm not talking about the greenhouse gas emissions from fireworks.  I really couldn't be bothered looking that up.  I'm just talking about air pollution for the fun of it)

Some cities have banned fireworks with the exception of holidays, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are banned entirely in the next decade.

But there are much much bigger problems to be solved, and new ones that keep raising themselves as the rate of progress outpaces our ability to predict whatever it does to the health and safety of persons. Let alone that we are politically paralyzed by our splintering democracy and unable to actually do anything. Even such low-hanging fruit are out of reach. In short we are doomed my friends, may as well have the New Years party, enjoy what little there is left, before up we all go.

It's actually weird that they would have the fireworks considering the fires.

  13. I'd just like to say, if anyone quoting me feels like correcting obvious typos in my quoted post, I'd be okay with that.

Climate change deniers refuse to lift a finger to address climate change "because it isn't enough and its too hard" and also demand that we must go to the extreme of cost and hardship before they'll think its serious enough to address.

Capturing carbon requires effort. It requires peace and cooperation. Obviously we don't have that. Even despite fancy speeches at the UN by little girls in pigtails. Sorry Greta, looks like there will be no SinterKlaus this yule...

  16. Lovely exchange at the border wall recently (courtesy of the Washington Post.)

Trump talking to reporters at border wall, describing the qualities of the new panels:

"One thing we haven't mentioned is technology. They're wired so that we will know if somebody's trying to break through. And you may want to discuss that a little bit, general."
    -- Trump

"Sir, there could be some merit in not discussing that."
-- Lt. Gen. Todd Semonite, acting head of the Army Corps of Engineers

  17. "It is a good deal to save all of humanity in the next five years,"

Well, that's that then!  I can't imagine anyone voting for anyone else in the upcoming election.

I mean, who wouldn't want humanity saved in the next five years?
