Politicians You Respect

Recommended Posts

After seeing the thread about the most irritating politicians, I think it would be interesting to see the opposite - which politicians you respect the most...preferably from different political parties.

Conservative: Jim Prentice, Michael Chong

Liberal: Paul Martin, Gerard Kennedy (although he's not currently a member)

Bloc: Gilles Duceppe

NDP: Pat Martin

Other: Bill Casey

Former members: Ed Broadbent, Chuck Cadman

NDP: Pat Martin

Can't agree on Pat Martin. His temper is legendary and he is prone to over the top insults. Every election he says something that reinforces that. Many people still can't believe what he said about David Northcott.

Stephane Dion-tried real hard to be a leader but just didn't get it done.

I couldn't really think of anyone else from the NDP except Ed Broadbent, but he's gone. By the way, what did he say about Northcott?

He called him a traitor for running with the Liberals and basically shouted him down in a debate. It was not Martin's finest hour. Northcott is a respected person in Winnipeg for a lifetime of working for the foodbank. Whatever his feelings for the Liberals, there was no call for his aggressive and nasty attack on Northcott.

You tried but jd highjacked as is his wont.

Let me bring it back on track.

Liberal: Michael Ignatieff, Ken Dryden

NDP: Bill Blaikie, Judy Wasylycia-Leis

CPC: Jim Prentice, Rob Anders

(The Anders thing needs some explanation. Rob is from a very different wing of the party than I am, and has done some mind-numbingly stupid things i.e. the Nelson Mandela fiasco, but he is an incredibly good guy on a personal level.)

I can't think of a single politician who I have faith in to run things.

They tend to come from law, which is poor training for running services, which is the essence of government today.

Enough said. While it gives them an understanding of legislation within the country it also makes them more aware of the loopholes within it.

This will be a short list.

I have respect for Trudeau, even though my ultra conservative family members tried their best to get me to grow up hating Trudeau and the liberals when i was young. The Charter of Rights and Freedoms is the most important piece of legislation we have to protect us from the powers of the state. Thank you Pierre Trudeau.

Now that I think of it I have repect for more than I thought. I still respect cretien regardless of what anyone says about adscam, Cretien was not afraid to stand up to America, and I think the sponsership scandal was way overblown. If it helped win the referendum on seperation of quebec it was worth every penny, even if some did end up in safety deposit boxes, mulroney style.

I respect the conservative prime minister who ended alcohol prohibition. (can't remember who that was but he was obviously smart enough to see that prohibition is a stupid policy)

I repect a lot of NDP politicians, namely Jack Layton, Libby Davies, Pat Martin, judy wachylisylis(sp?), and lets not forget the greatest Canadian, Tommy Douglas.

I'd also add Marc Emery of the BC Marijuana Party, and Gilles Duceppe of the bloc. I actually kind of like Gilles, too bad he's a seperatist. Marc Emery is a modern day human rights champion. I would rate him as a Canadian folk hero.

Do senators count? I have the utmost respect for conservative Nolin. Also for Liberal senator Larry Campbell.

Harper definitely does not make the list of the respected, in fact he can kiss my arse.
