Planned Mountie pay increases rolled back

The government is rolling back planned pay increases for members of the RCMP by 0.5 per cent over the next two years, CTV News has learned.

The Mounties were expecting pay increases of 2 per cent in 2009 and 2010 as well as a 1.5 per cent market adjustment in 2009. Instead the pay increases are being decreased to 1.5 per cent and there will be no market adjustment.

Commissioner William Elliott broke the news to the force members in an email sent Friday afternoon.

I wonder how some of the RCMP now feel about the Tories now?

You think that is what they are going to think? Or do you think you might get an election surprise?

The Liberals shut down depot. The RM's I talk to were quite upset about that. I think they will understand that taking a small cut in a pay raise is more than acceptable. They aren't even getting a pay cut. They would rather take a pay cut than be denied manpower. Manpower is their main problem, not pay raises.

Apparently according to the Liberals, in order to save money the Mounties have to go without backup. The Liberals would rather make a Mountie's job more dangerous than cutting a pay raise. But according to a Liberal a dead Mountie is the best money saver yet.

This is the stupidest partisan hack job you've ever done.

Considering they have been waiting for this pay raise for a while, I'm sure they are asking why they are being targeted.

Talk about partisan statements. Reminds of the some of the worst attacks by Conservatives.

This is the stupidest partisan hack job you've ever done.

This is the most personal of attacks you have ever done. No wait...

Judging by the way the RCMP has embarrassed themselves with their unnecessary use of tasers they don't deserve any increase at all.

What are you saying? That they should have shot the perps and asked questions later? Or are you saying they should let the perps shoot them dead? People like you will never be satisfied no matter what the RCMP does.

The mounties get paid well enough. Pay raises ought to be merely to offset inflation. Inflation is going to be lower than had previously been expected, so a wage raise based on inflation ought to be rolled back a bit.

I'm sure there is a very good reason but the announcement late on a Friday and letting Treasury inform the Comissioner is a little cowardly. The article mentions how there is likely to be a backlash against the Tories for this.

Would you rather your hero Paul Martin come in and shut down Depot and screw the Mounties out of backup again?

I'm sure this cutback will result in a very happy RCMP grateful the Tories have not cut them even more. Not.

Now according to the Liberals the Mounties are not only greedy and money hungry, they are also stupid and don't know that a financial crisis is going on. If Liberals think that a pay cut is going to piss off the Mounties over the Alternative of shutting down Depot thus depriving them of manpower, the Liberals are not fit for government. Cripes it's not even a pay cut, it's a pay raise cut. But Liberals think that less Mounties around are the best money savers of all, appparently public safety, officer safety/workload don't matter one whit.

You've picked a poor topic to try and bash the tories on when the Liberals are guilty of much worse.

Stupidest post ever, Argus, a federal civil servant has pointed out why Mulroney had to run deficits in order to pay for the Massive debt that your hero Trudeau put in.

This is nothing more than Liberal rhetoric. Jdobbin is just trying to make an issue out of nothing. No matter what the Tories and Harper do he will bash them/him. IF the Liberals put this measure instead of the Tories he'd be praising them as being fiscally sound. You can sell it but no ones buying this time. Nice try for the spin.

Merry Xmas to you too! The government isn't admitting much about their spending spree they had and how much they have put the country back into deficit and as a Canadian who seems to care about this country as much as the rest of us do, don't you want to know? Is it so bad that is why there no pay increases? Next, they probably try to cut retirement pensions to Fed. workers.

Yet you suport $30 Billion deficit proposed by The Separtist Coalition funded by raising corporate taxes. Just a lot of hot air for all your noise Topaz. Slight double standard here wouldn't ya say?

The Tories are cowardly and can't even admit that they have cut the long expected raises. I guess after an election this is what to expect. And the RCMP officers have very little recourse. Nice how this was annouced again late Friday.

And all hyperpartisan Tories can say is 'But the Liberals!"

That isn't going to wash with a force thinking they have been betrayed by the Tories.

But the Liberals!

It isn't going to make many RCMP happy to find that the Tories announce this late on a Friday and don't even have the guts to stand up a give a reason. Total cowards.

How much are the Harper Tories going to spend? Looks like $3 billion to start. How much more?

What do yo expect, we're in a financial crisis. Costs have to be cut. However it's better to cut a pay raise than shutting down the training academy like the Liberals did in the 90's which has resulted in a massive staffing crisis. A pay raise cut is a mere pittance to a staffing crisis where having adequate numbers is crucial.

The tories don't need to give a reason, the writing is on the wall.

No peace officer goes into service for the money. They do it out of duty and care...a small pay cut will not diswade them...The RCMP - are our finest marshallists...They will serve because they were born to this purpose. Also remember that your best are not to be abused - with out this standing army - there is no law - for law means nothing without inforcement.

This is exactly my thinking. In the next few months, inflation will be low to non-existent. These raises amount to significant raises in real terms.
