Conservatives Admit Making Phoney Telephone Calls

Recommended Posts

The Conservatives have confirmed they are behind a rash of phone calls to Liberal MP Irwin Cotler’s Montreal riding over the past couple of weeks in which constituents allegedly were told of Cotler’s resignation and a pending byelection.

But while the party says it was not breaking any rules, political scientists feel the tactic crosses a line and will harm not only voters’ trust in the system, but perhaps even trust in the Conservatives themselves.

Is this how we want our ruling politicians to behave? Like tweens and drama queens spreading rumours about each other?

If it were only like tweens and drama queens I wouldn't much care. But it is only another example of how deep cyncicism runs within that party. The Libs were vain. The CPC is the Big Blue Vein party.

It IS wrong! Most likely, it was initiated by the team under the MP for that riding. That alone should have earned the MP a reprimand and some internal party punishment.

However, for the party to defend him is also a bit much. I could understand a cautious approach, in order to see all the facts as they come out and also to see if the issue might fade away! After all, it would be stupid to believe the word of the Opposition as gospel, or that of a newspaper owned by TorStar. They have a vested agenda and have never hesitated to follow it.

But once and if guilt becomes clear then they should have dropped that MP like a hot potato! That's what Reform under Preston Manning did, on more than one occasion!

Just another indication that there's nothing left of Reform in the present CPC party. The integrity appears to have suffered. This is much more like the old Mulroney PC party than Reform.

Fraud is obviously endemic to this administration. All of these smaller "non-stories" underlie a deeper spirit of entitlement that will bite them in the backside by the time we go to the polls again. The Conservatives are no better than the Liberals that preceded them.

In order to clean up fraud and corruption of democracy in Canada, clearly we have to take down both the Libs and Cons. They're both too entrenched in corruption to ever clean up without total destruction, imo.

I agree that integrity seems totally lacking.

They're a bunch of crooks.

the libs have been paying the price for 5 years now.. will be 9 by the time we have our next election

that is enough time

seems like when cons get caught for being corrupt the mindless always bring up the libs

find someone else to whine about

Yes, they do seem to so that a lot don't they. Almost like an automatic response. Must be the indoctrination programs they go through.

It really makes me wonder about the phone scandals that occurred during the election. Of course, they'd never admit to those. But why so open about this one?

And it really hits why I don't like the current brand of Conservatives. The downright ugly, undemocratic and uncalled for tactics the party resorts to.

I forgot about the election ones. Great point.

Barack Obama raised almost $1 billion using such tactics. Was that bad?

In modern democracies, political parties must collect money from many, many people, and know who their voters are. I reckon that the federal Liberals are simply jealous that they can't/don't know how to exist in this modern world.
