Harper invites anti-gay womens group to nominate Canadians

Recommended Posts

Well, some conservatives on here were saying that the Conservatives were gay friendly..which they seem to be, allowing gay foreigners to divorce & speaking up against the homosexual oppression in other Commonwealth countries and not repealing Same sex marriage but why would they shun LGBTs from this?

This government is so confusing with their messages.. if they are pro gay then be pro gay but don't fricking flip flop

Gay-rights groups aren’t among the 168 community organizations invited by the Harper government to nominate Canadians for a prestigious medal marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Among the list, however, is REAL Women of Canada – a conservative women’s group some critics call homophobic.

The saga has left leaders in Canada’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community wondering why they were frozen out while REAL Women (which speaks out against “gay-friendly” schools, laments the “highly sexualized gay agenda” and is a frequent intervenor in gay rights court cases) was included

Their messaging has always been off on this issue because they seem to have to throw bones every once and a while to their social conservative base in order to appease them. The same thing was happening when they cancelled funding requests for Pride activities. They clearly are anti-gay, but know if they were in such an overt way it would be political suicide. Power definitely wins out against repealing gay rights.

So, they use these small instances in order to throw bones to their base. That's my theory anyway.

That sounds accurate enough

It's a good theory. If it weren't for these ridiculous culture grenades that they lob over from time to time, their base might not recognize them as conservatives. Even if they back off on some/most/any of these moves, it's a way to keep their base happy: they care about these things, and those who get really upset over them would never vote Conservative.

I think this probably works both ways. Without a little moral outrage now and then to keep them on the straight and narrow conservatives wouldn't recognize themselves.

In any case and however cheap a price conservatives place on whoring themselves out to one another, it's the rest of us that pick up the real bills, i.e. planes and prisons...

a conservative women’s group some critics call homophobic.

This is always my favourite trick of the mainstream media. Critics say. Yep, crtics say a lot of things. Depending on who you're talking about. Some critics think Harper's a fascist with a secret agenda. Some people think Obama's a marxist. Some critics may even be critical of the critics in question in this particular scenario.

Critics say, or some say is just a media cop out.

I'm wondering a little while Harper needs to openly needs to consult groups, does he not know of anyone without asking people? Isn't that how he appoints every other award/position/office?

Canada is likely in the closet or more conservative than most European countries on this issue, Canada has a between 1-2% homosexual / bisexual LGBTQ population while countries in Europe are more experimental with between 3-4% of the population being open sexuality.

This does not necessarily directly correlate with prison populations in Canada.

What you were expecting the Pro Zionist Christian Right party to support gay rights?

You'd think you were using alternate orifices if you really believe that.

Something about out of your minds. or into in this case?

The Queen's followers include quite a few ... um ... 'queens' ...

Perhaps they're trying to avoid drawing a crowd full of drag queens to the celebration? I'm curious whether the Monarchist League is on the list.

:D

Where does it say that Harper had anything to do with the selection of the invitees? Do you really think that's something he has time to do?

Looking at their website, maybe they were included because aside from having moral opinions, they fight for equality for women, in general, in other areas. Or maybe the group wasn't properly vetted. Don't forget the Martin government selected someone with separatist ties to be G.G.. They were selecting a single person. This involves 168 groups.

The Harper government has continued to protect the rights of the gay community - even though it's their secret agenda not to do so. They're probably just waiting to have a second majority, just to be devious.

The list of partner organisations is at the Governor General's website (the NGOs are under the second tab). There's no information there on how each group was selected to be on the list; a spokesperson from Rideau Hall is quoted in the article in the OP as saying only that it came from the "government of Canada". Whether or not that means the Department of Canadian Heritage or the PMO isn't at all clear.

The thing is, it's incorrect to say anyone was "frozen out" of the nomination process for the Diamond Jubilee Medal. Anyone can submit a nomination form to the lieutenant governor of their province, their federal MP, senator, or premier.
