NDP support Alberta pipeline!

Recommended Posts

The politics of pipeline expansion in Canada are shifting again, as the federal NDP – which strongly opposes plans for a Northern Gateway pipeline to the Pacific coast – is now pledging its full support for a pipeline that would see Alberta oil pumped to Eastern Canada.

Mr. Mulcair said shipping western oil to Eastern Canada is a “pro-business, common sense solution” that will create jobs and boost the country’s energy security.

I have ot say that I am shocked as I always thought the NDP were against the oil sands as layton always spoke badly of it. Now we have a new leader Mulcair who is in favor of building a pipeline from Alberta and eastward.

I don't think Layton would ever have done this. Perhaps he is trying to make inroads into the west where the Liberals are dead.

At any rate maybe I was wrong about Mulcair he seems to be doing the right thing here. Surprising.

This and building more refineries in Canada makes a lot more sense than shipping all of your oil down to the US or out to China.

I think it is important for Canada's energy security... not to mention a nation with as much oil supply as Canada should not be seeing such high gas prices.

I like the idea of a pipeline to the east even though it would cost a bit more.

1. Currently we export most of our oil from venezuela.

2. We have refining capacity out there.

3. We should export as little oil as possible because that makes it hard for us to export anything else.

Obviously Mr. Mulcair recognizes that Canada needs the pipeline, as does Ontario, he is seeing the error of his ways ( or seeing where the votes are LOL )

Who’s going to pay for the refineries and mega pipeline? The NDP was opposed to potentially damaging the environment of British Columbia, but crossing countless Precambrian aquifers, rivers/streams and even more First Nations land is ok? The Keystone pipeline was also claimed to be devastating to the Canadian biosphere prior to crossing the 49th………..A river can sort itself out with time, but once a low lying aquifer is polluted it’s done.

What a bunch of hypocrites.

I got an idea........If one pipeline is good for Canada, why not build multiple pipelines………….I mean, build the NDP’s uber line, coupled with the Northern Gateway west, the Keystone south and one North up into the Arctic pumping south? No better way to assert ourselves in the Arctic then start exploiting it’s resources………

So they don't care about the environmental impact of the pipeline?

I know hey………And I thought they were about ready to take the training wheels off…………..I’ve got some solace in that young Trudeau looks to have some potential to rebuild the Liberal brand, so when my Tories are finally tossed, there’s at least an adult alternative to replace them…….. :)

As far as debate on this forum goes,no.

But if you want an endless, mindless, circular, why why why am I wasting my precious time arguing with you debate, ask Waldo about the environmental impact.

The NDP were talking about the environmental impacts of the Northern Gateway, there's gong to be environmental impacts of a west east pipeline.

First, we don't exp[ort oil to Venezuela, we import some from there. ;)

THE SAME PEOPLE WHO GOUGE US AT THE PUMPS 24/7/365. who else should pay for it? when we pay thee exorbitant price at the gas pumps we are also paying for refineries.

So you will force the oil companies to invest in costly infrastructure……….And what if they don’t see the returns in terms of revenue as favourable? Nationalization?

You know, this has to be the underlying plot from the NDP……….NEP redux?

I think even the NDP realize that the pipeline, etc, is a great source of revenue, for important things like health care, education, and old age security, etc.

Yes Im sure thats true. But with the idea of a pipeline to the east theres a huge environmental and safety angle.

Right now we import most of our oil from venezuela, yet we export much of our own production. The reason we do that is because oil production is in the west but our refining capacity is in the east. If we stopped importing and instead met all our own needs, then exports would slow to a trickle... we could easily sell it to the US.

Its not suprising this kind of idea would appeal to the NDP. There would be no more oil tanker traffic on either coast if we did this and the gravitational pull between oil prices and CDN Dollar exchange rates would be reduced which would help domestic production, tourism, etc.

I almost choked when during QP nash got up and said how important the oil sands were to our economy, the laughter was so loud she had to sit down and wait it out. Talk about a major flip flop.
