Windows 10 coming out in July 2015

Recommended Posts

Next Month!

And it'll be a free update if you're on Windows 7 or 8.

http://www.thestar.com/business/2015/06/01/microsoft-to-launch-windows-10-in-late-july.html

I will admit the lack of a Start Menu is a bit of a drag. A lot of the Control Panel features aren't as easily accessible with Windows 8.1.

The App system is cool for tablet or hybrid users but I can completely understand why people using it just for desktop publishing would be less than thrilled that it's always pushing you to a panelled App-based interface.

But ultimately that's where computing is going. These hybrid PCs are really great, better than anything Apple is producing now.

Watch Apple concede in the coming years and release an iPad that has a keyboard dock and can run full OSX.

A- everyone is going to be forced into Windows 10, no choice.

B - I do not want Windows 10.

The icon to reserve my copy is in my system tray, and there is no way to get rid of it.

This is the kind of push stuff I despise when it comes to technology and updates. Give me the option, if I decline, go away.

Your cellphone pretty much forces you to update to a new OS, so this is the norm for people.

I run an android, and no I do not get forced updates. The reason, I do not use wifi (often) or have a data plan on my phone.

I want the option, I do not want to be forced into it, or I will go with another OS like a linux flavour. I won't go Mac, because they are already in this mindset.

I know what you mean. In any case...to remove the icon

  • Open Control Panel, click on Appearance and Personalization, then Taskbar and Start Menu.
  • Click the Notification Area tab, and then do one or both of the following:
  • To remove system icons, under System icons, clear the check boxes of the icons you want to remove.
  • To remove other icons, click Customize, click the icon you want to remove, click the drop-down list that appears next to the icon, click Hide, and then click OK.

I will update to Win10. The OS is outstanding and it works well for both traditional mouse and keyboard users as well as touchscreen/tab users. However, I am a little worried about the July 29th deadline. I've played with the latest beta and it's still a little buggy. Hopefully, they have the bulk of the kinks ironed out before the release date.

I will be upgrading too. Note that the deadline for upgrade is not July 29, 2015 but July 29, 2016. So if you have qualms about upgrading you can defer for a year and by that time any major bugs would be made public and perhaps corrected.

Microsoft is making Windows 10 available as free upgrade for qualified Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 devices. It will be available starting July 29, 2015; people can reserve their free upgrade today.

You only have until July 29, 2016 to take advantage of this offer. Once you upgrade, you have Windows 10 for free on that device.

I run Windows 7 and I'm tired of " internet explorer has quit working" messages, so I'll take my time switching and hope that all kinks are gone.

You'll just get a security issues/warning icon instead if you do that.

I don't...as all that bloat is turned off. Have separate firewall and security.

Here's something that seems to have worked...

Control Panel > Windows Update > Installed Updates. Right click on Windows patch named KB3035583 > Uninstall, then reboot.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have selected to install the patch the last time I updated things. I've never had my machine update anything automatically...oh well.

I've been using it for awhile now and it's great. It's what Win8 should have been. Instead of forcing the touch friendly, best for tablet, interface on users it's now optional.

So far, so good. I even removed Starbuck so I guess that I'm going "bareback".

I had a "minor" glitch while going from 8.1 to 10; the installation stalled. So, I chose the external/USB/DVD installation method. (Yes, I reserved in April but being abroad when the installation offer arrived, I declined and then chose to do it when back in Quebec ... Maybe this explains the glitch. Still, I would opt for the USB install.)

As to privacy, I somehow feel more comfortable. Later in the installation, I chose the custom button and then declined most offers to include my email/home phone number/birth date/name of last known boyfriend/girlfriend.

Despite my clicks largely to decline, Windows 10 still installed and it works well, so far... Windows 10 still refers to me as August1991 - and sometimes wants me to login with my cellphone number, email - explaining that it can collect all the email of August1991 in one place and make the life of August1991 much better ....

If Microsoft tells the world that I'm August1991, I can live with that, sort of . But for other stuff, I prefer to refine who knows what.

As I say, so far so good. No Charm Bar and there's even a version of "Control Panel".

=====

What happened to "Windows 9"?
