Do you see ads?

Recommended Posts

Don't freak out, I'm only testing ad placements in the forums.

Ads used to be part of the forums (before the recent upgrade) and they will likely be a part of the forums going forward.

I may also introduce a paid membership level, which would remove the ads and provide some additional features.  However, that isn't going to happen in the short term.

Thanks!

Oh I don't mind ads.  If it helps with the upkeep of the forum....that's okay.  I just want to make sure I didn't get dinged surfing, and brought these on to my computer.

No need for paid membership,  ad-block for the win!

I think membership fee will be the nail on the coffin.  Activity on this site is almost non-existent when compared to the busy forums....so, who'll want to pay?  There might be  a few who would, but you'll lose members.

How about "donations" instead?  Have it so that donations are also open to non-members.

At Debate Politics, they have a set-up fund raise for the amount needed for the month.  The goal for this month is $290.00 .  People are donating.  Check it out:

http://www.debatepolitics.com/

Maybe, members should post a minimum numbers of posts per day in lieu of membership fee -

that should get the board moving.  This board desperately needs active REGULAR members!   There's only a handful of them here.  Emphasis on REGULAR.

It's not good enough to have new members who'll only post once or twice - how can one keep a discussion going with hit-and-runs?  You respond to them, and you never hear from them again.  That's no fun at all.

Create a "Special Area" that's not open to everyone.  Members gain access in that special area by making the minimum numbers of posts for the day (and/or making donations for the month).

Non-members/viewers gain access by giving a minimum donation for the month.  make it a rule, "what goes in Special Area, stays in Special Area."  Don't talk about it in any other section.

Suggestion for the special area would be to have a section for General Discusssion (anything goes - including conspiracy theories), Scandals (from celebs to politics), Kitchen (recipes, kitchen stuffs),   Ye Olde Pub (members shoot the breeze), etc.,

Going to a particular site is more of habit and familiarity.

To encourage newbies to post often, get the hang of hanging out here - have a ranking system.  Maybe, earn a rank before you can start giving likes?  Before you can use private messaging? Before you can start your own topic?

Again, check out the other site.  In my opinion, this site has gotten it somewhat down pat with its bells and whistles thus, it's busy. (It has slowed down somewhat though, compared to when I first became a member) - moderators were becoming suspension-happy, from what I'd seen.  They'd curved that now, but it hasn't gotten back to the way it was when I first joined in.

The Basement - open only to members - where-in the administrator blatantly takes sides and admit his  bias is a big turn-off, I find.   The Basement is the pits.

It's still one of the best forums out there despite that.

You earn a title for so many posts.  I'm a "veteran."  Your title is prominently displayed under your name.

I like the adds. The ones I see are Kijiji listings of vintage dirt bikes. That's right up my alley.

All I see are ads for hookers and porn....   weird....

But the ads on the forum page are annoying. Almost looks like Malware.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm only testing the ad locations right now and in the future I am offer the ability for members to read the forums ad free.

www.mapleleafweb.com then you have to click the forum tab. I guess before I came here, this site was more of a news site than just a forum.

There's always been ads there and it's tailored to my cookies because It's always showing the hotels I've been looking at for my next trip.

Ah ok, now I understand what you mean - the font page.

Yes, MLW used to published regularly (I was the project director); we focused primarily on political education, but the funding ran out after a decade.

Cheers!

The ads that appear right between topic titles are annoying, though.

Misleading too.  I clicked on that "Review your matches for free" ad looking for a review of today's Manchester United - Anderlecht match, and it started asking me all these personal questions!

Sod that, I thought.  I'll stick to Sky Sports.

My ads are on the side too. I prefer them in that location rather than between forums or topics. The problem is many of the products I see advertised I've already bought.

Google places the ads based on your recent search history.

I doubt it.  I've been married for 35 years and neither I nor my wife are looking for a "match".

Isn't that right Dear?

Dear?

The algorithms are correct, you just did not know you were looking.

Then what good are they, if they advertise a product in which I have no interest?
