Winter of Discontent (Middle East, North Africa)

Recommended Posts

They called it the "Arab Spring"--a pretty stupid name imho, by the way--but it morphed into a winter of discontent. What did it really achieve?

It started in Tunis in January 2011, where long-time president Ben Ali got out of dodge after spontaneous and violent protests. Ditto Hosni Mubarak by the end of the next month; the biggest snowball possible in such hot weather. The by-product is that civil wars still rage in Yemen and Syria; and Egypt is once again under the mandate of a "president" who will likely remain so for years, just like Mubarak.

One wonders, why some countries experience a merry-go-round of dictatorship-almost democracy-dictatorship, whereas other countries can actually transition from dictatorship to quasi-democracy to democracy. (Though not very often.)

Two Scandinavian womem, a Norwegian and a Dane, were murdered in Morocco as they foolishly went camping in the mountains. ISIS has claimed responsibility.

News like this is poison for Morocco which is dependant on tourism.

On Saturday there was a demonstration in the Moroccan capital outside the Danish embassy expressing anger at the crime and condoleances for the families of the murdered women.

A nice gesture one might say. A more cynical person would interpret it as a plea not to stop visiting Morocco as Morocco still needs your money.

It has been said that one should never blame the victims of any crime but despite that I can't help thinking how stupid those women were. Hiking and camping alone in the mountains of Morocco.

However, if you live in extremely soft countries which all Scandinavian countries are it is probably easy to develop a bubble in your head thinking that all of the world is nice and full of kind people.

Sad to say but in the Scandinavian schools people are subjected to exactly that kind of brainwashing from very early on that all people everywhere are nice and to doubt that makes you a prejudiced bigot.

I think you could include almost every western country in that statement, Scandinavian women are not the only retards to go hiking in a hostile Muslim country, Not sure what convinces them that it would be a great idea....but we in the west are way to trusting overall, just look at the all the liberal government platforms and you'll get what I mean...
