Just how completely fucked up the Left can become is demonstrated by the growing movement to not have children. In fact, the movement for human extinction because this would be a good thing for the Earth.

Today is International Workers’ Day, a holiday with socialist origins. Its name hearkens back to a time when the political Left was ostensibly devoted to the cause of human welfare. These days, however, some on the far Left care less about the wellbeing of people than they do about making sure that people are never born at all. How did these radicals come to support a massive reduction in human population, if not humanity’s demise? Whether it’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez questioning the morality of childbearing, a birth-strike movement that encourages people to forego parenthood despite the “grief that [they say they] feel as a result,” or political commentator Bill Maher blithely claiming, “I can’t think of a better gift to our planet than pumping out fewer humans to destroy it,” a misanthropic philosophy known as “anti-natalism” is going increasingly mainstream.

I think it's a great idea.  Of course, like a carbon tax or a pipeline ban, it probably won't make any difference in the long run. Still, it's something the individual can do without pissing everyone else off.

There are some contradictions in your quoted piece. Not having people born at all is caring more, not less, and a massive reduction in human population would aid humanity’s survival, not their demise.  I'm with Bill. (blithely or not)

I suppose some of it is simply not wanting to bring something you are going to love into a world where they are probably going to suffer.

What would the world be like without the West? Would that seriously be an improvement of the human condition? Because anyone with a sliver of rationality knows this sort of faddish bullshit is only ever going to have any impact in the West. It sure as hell is not going to stop more Indians, Muslims, Africans or Chinese from being born.

Roughly 1 billion out of 7.5 billion people on the world make up "The West". Reducing the numbers further while numbers continue to grow at an explosive rate in most of the rest of the world is not in any way a 'great idea' for the future of the planet'.

The story of the social justice mobbing of a young scholar at Cambridge was covered a short time back, an example of how previously elite institutions like Cambridge have succumbed to groupthink and betrayed the very ideals they are alleged to stand for - that being academic inquiry and teaching without regard to popular thought.

The latest victim of an academic mobbing is 28-year-old social scientist Noah Carl who has been awarded a Toby Jackman Newton Trust Research Fellowship at St Edmund’s College at the University of Cambridge.

Rarely has the power asymmetry between the academic mob and its victim been so stark. Dr Carl is a young researcher, just starting out in his career, who is being mobbed for being awarded a prestigious research scholarship on the basis of his peer-reviewed research.

While getting a position like this is normally a time for celebration for junior academics, Dr Carl has gone to ground, unable to defend his reputation from libellous attacks, as he has been instructed not to talk to the media.

Three hundred academics from around the world, many of them professors, have signed an open letter denouncing Dr Carl and demanding that the University of Cambridge “immediately conduct an investigation into the appointment process” on the grounds that his work is “ethically suspect” and “methodologically flawed.” The letter states: “we are shocked that a body of work that includes vital errors in data analysis and interpretation appears to have been taken seriously.” Yet the letter contains no evidence of any academic misconduct. It does not include a single reference to any of Dr Carl’s papers, let alone any papers that are “ethically suspect” or “methodologically flawed.”

I note it now because the individual in question has been fired, and Cambridge has apologized for hiring him.

Yeah, like I said, if you don't get the right amount of buy in, it's just another useless carbon tax.  Except it doesn't cost me anything.

As for the demographics, relative birth rates are going to do that anyway, but the fighting will even it all out somewhat.

These tossers are probably the same ones considering lowering their birth rate.  Ever think of that?

I used to be a Cambridge fan, as the only member of my extended family who ever went to one of the big two was a cousin who went there in the sixties.  I support them in the boat race.

It's a shame to see them so diametrically opposed to what a good university ought to be.

Edit> Someone (you?) posted a cartoon of a black activist from the sixties offering advice to a thumb sucking baby on one thread here.  It strikes me how apt that cartoon would be in this situation, only with an open book instead of a raised fist.

A million species are going to die because of climate change! At least that's the blaring headline. But... a million? Really? Are there even a million species?

And as this guy points out, there are only 3,000 species on the endangered species list, so... where's the rest coming from?

China is censoring stuff even in America, even stuff they've never seen or heard of. American entertainment conglomerates are desperately reluctant to show anything which might displease China, even in shows which aren't intended to ever be shown there, in case the Chinese government retaliates against movies they DO intend to show there.

The CBS television show “The Good Fight”, (available on the CBS All Access streaming service) is a spinoff of the previous CBS primetime hit “The Good Wife”. The program is a political-based drama that is fully immersive in real-time politics, with plots that involve real life named individuals in DC life.

In its desire to infuse contemporary storylines a recent episode was addressing the issue of China and the ruling government’s stronghold on that country’s cultural offerings. The show had a brief scene included mentioning the Chinese Communist party tendencies to censor and control the content, and in a bit dark irony CBS ended up censoring the scene. It appears the network decided late in the process that the brief scene was too sensitive to the liking of the Chi-Coms.

Viewers had initially believed the blacked out screen time was an inclusion by the writers, making a wry comment on the issue of censorship. One of the show’s writers verified that it was not a dose of intentional satire but an official move made by the network. This was eventually confirmed by an official comment from executives.

Did anyone else find it a trifle odd that we suddenly had a jobs report that produced the most jobs in a month since 1976? I haven't seen any sign of a booming economy, and we LOST jobs last month. How did that suddenly reverse? Is something screwy with the statistics?

A loss of 7,200 jobs in March, and then a gain of 106,500 jobs in April. For David Rosenberg, Canada’s latest employment data just doesn't add up.

Statistics Canada said Friday that Canadian employment increased by 106,500 positions in April, the biggest one-month increase in data going back to 1976. The country's jobless rate fell to 5.7 per cent, compared to 5.8 per cent in March.

But Rosenberg, chief economist and strategist at Gluskin Sheff + Associates, says the country's latest jobs numbers are hard to believe, given what's happening in the Canadian economy.

"Did you really believe that the Canadian labour market is so volatile that we could have a [7,200] decline in the labour force in one month, followed by an 100,000-increase in the next month? Is our labour market more volatile than the stock market is? It's hard to believe," Rosenberg said in an interview with BNN Bloomberg Friday.

How western feminism ignores anti female violence when it comes from non-whites, and in particular, from Muslims. Complaining might seem racist, you see.

And God help you if it’s a case in which white women have been victimised by non-white men. Swedish journalist Paulina Neuding has written in Quillette about the dramatic rise in sex crimes in Sweden over the last decade. Swedish authorities have been unwilling to recognise this trend, in large part because the evidence suggests that immigrant men from North Africa and the Middle East are overrepresented among the perpetrators. Sweden is one of many European countries that have seen a huge rise in a particular form of sex crime in which large gangs of men surround women in order to sexually assault and sometimes rob them. This phenomenon first gained widespread attention following attacks in Cologne on New Year’s Eve 2015. The Left across Europe has been reluctant to acknowledge the scale of this phenomenon because the perpetrators are mostly young Muslim men and the victims are mostly white women.

Came across this one by accident. It's what happens when progressives take control. In New York, in one of the largest school district's in the US, the new Hispanic boss is making it clear that whites aren't welcome.

Whiteness has become “toxic” under Chancellor Richard Carranza’s regime, insiders charge.

At least four top Department of Education executives who have been demoted or stripped of duties under Carranza’s sweeping reorganization are poised to sue the city, claiming he has created “an environment which is hostile toward whites,” a source told The Post.

The women — all white, veteran administrators — contend they were pushed aside for less qualified persons of color.

“These decisions are being made because DOE leadership believes that skin color plays a role in how to get equity — that white people can’t convey the message,” said a source familiar with the complaints.

“There’s a toxic whiteness concept going on.”

Canada just spent half a billion dollars to upgrade its torpedoes. Not something I've seen mentioned in any Canadian media.

Canada’s request covers 425 MK 54 lightweight torpedo conversion kits, along with associated support equipment. The kits will be used to upgrade Canada’s existing MK 46 torpedoes.

“The MK 54 torpedo is designed to be easily upgraded from the existing MK 46 torpedo,” the DSCA notification reads. “Canada plans to utilize MK 54 Lightweight Torpedoes on its Royal Canadian Navy's Halifax class ships, the Royal Canadian Air Force's CP-140 Aurora Aircraft, and the CH-148 Maritime Helicopters. Canada will have no difficulty absorbing this equipment into its armed forces.”

There are lineups on Mr. Everest, way up near the top - long lines. People are dying waiting in line to get to the top!

Which says to me that there are a whole lot of really stupid people in this world with way too much time and money on their hands.

Whether it’s the Christchurch Call, the Digital Charter, House Oversight committees, or Facebook and Twitter clamping down on speech from unsavory groups, there is a rise in awareness about hate speech and hate crimes. However, the fact that more people know about these horrible phenomena is not an indication that they are increasing.

In Canada, the Trudeau government is going full steam ahead with efforts to censor and regulate content it deems to be “hate.” Activist Morgane Oger had the audacity to refer to this very publication (as well as a prominent feminist publication) as “hate propaganda” in front of a parliamentary committee. In the States, a recent House Oversight committee undertook a hearing to question the perceived rise in hate crimes and white nationalism. There is a broadening definition of what “hate” means, and this broadening definition is being intentionally perpetrated.

The federal government just spent $47 million to build a road linking a community of 266 people to another similar community on the other side of a small river. That works out to about $176,000 per person. Here's an idea. Maybe they could have moved those people across the river for way less?

The government offered to build a bridge 18 years ago but the community refused, fearing traffic(!?)

How crazed are social media people? Pretty damned crazed.

It seems this rich couple who own a basketball team invited Beyonce and Jay-Z to be their guests courtside. Then a video came out of the wife leaning across Beyonce to say something to Jay-Z. This was taken as a slight by her loonie social media fans who proceeded to hound the woman off Instagram, insulting and threatening her with death.

It seems it was loud and she was asking him if he wanted lime with his drink...

This is from the Spectator, a bastion of intelligence in today's barren world of progressive zealotry. In today's column, Ron Liddle talks about the fascism of the Left, and how it is determined to shut down any opinions which disagree with its narrative.

Diversity’s valued — unless it’s diversity of opinion

The BBC has advised its journalists not to use the word ‘terror’ or ‘terrorist’ when some bloke blows himself up screaming ‘Allahu akbar’ in a public place, thus killing as well lots of non-Allahu akbar kind of people. The words ‘terror’ or ‘terrorist’ are, in this context, pejorative and the use of them involves making an assumption, which of course we must never do. It may not have been terror which the chap intended to instil in the local population, but enlightenment, good cheer and a general sense of bonhomie, of course. Given that the BBC no longer uses the word ‘Islamic’ whenever mentioning these sorts of actions,  it is a bit of a struggle to know how its journalists will describe them at all. Perhaps they will simply cease reporting them. Or just show the footage and comment only: ‘Bang! Now have a guess who did this.’

80% of Americans of all ages and races dislike political correctness in a recent study. Which also revealed that progressives are the most homogenous political group in America, almost all upper middle class, college educated, and 97% white.

According to the report, 25 percent of Americans are traditional or devoted conservatives, and their views are far outside the American mainstream. Some 8 percent of Americans are progressive activists, and their views are even less typical. By contrast, the two-thirds of Americans who don’t belong to either extreme constitute an “exhausted majority.” Their members “share a sense of fatigue with our polarized national conversation, a willingness to be flexible in their political viewpoints, and a lack of voice in the national conversation.”

Most members of the “exhausted majority,” and then some, dislike political correctness. Among the general population, a full 80 percent believe that “political correctness is a problem in our country.” Even young people are uncomfortable with it, including 74 percent ages 24 to 29, and 79 percent under age 24. On this particular issue, the woke are in a clear minority across all ages.

The Age of Amnesia compares today's growing politically correct orthodoxy in academia and life to the religious orthodoxy which prevailed in the middle ages, where anything which contradicted prevailing beliefs was outlawed.,and calls it a threat to democracy.

Intellectual intolerance thrives when the heritage of the past—with its mixed and inconvenient lessons—is sent down the memory hole. In feudal times, classical heritage was replaced by rigid religious dogma. Today’s clerisy uses the education system, the media, and the means of cultural production to impose its standards of “privilege” and value, and to decide who deserves special dispensations.

Throughout history, those who assume an absolute superiority of belief rarely demonstrate a natural inclination to skepticism or doubt. Education and culture are not prerequisites for enlightenment; academicians, entertainers, and scientists thrived in the Soviet Union, and in Nazi Germany, they served as a “stronghold” of the party and, later the regime. Academics, artists and journalists can prove to be the most vociferous conformists and enforcers of orthodoxy.

When is a 'hate crime' not a hate crime? And what is a hate crime anyway? And who benefits from having more of them?

We see here a similar type of slippage in standards that we see in the statistics: a broadening and loosening of boundaries of what can be described as “hate” to promote institutional activity designed to combat it. We see this right across the public sphere.

Hate crime now appears as a political crime, an outrage against social justice. There is a good case for saying that actual incidents of genuine hate crime should be seen in this way. But the loosening of standards has helped broaden social definitions of criminality to the extent that pretty much anyone who does not rigorously observe the favouritisms of the system of diversity is open to forms of social sanction—for example, in finding and retaining work, and in being allowed to participate in public life. Accusing your opponents of causing people to commit hate crimes—or branding them hate criminals—is now a perfectly legitimate weapon against your political opponents and unprotected identity groups, and even, in some cases, a way of expressing hatred for them (but of an approved kind that is not defined as hate). As Brendan O’Neill has commented, it has effectively facilitated “a libel against the nation” following the Brexit vote.

Writing about the criminalisation of “hate” in the United States in the late twentieth century, the academics Valerie Jenness and Ryken Grattet quote the journalist John Leo, a free speech advocate:

More and more aggrieved groups want to magnify their victim status. This is one of the little inter-group truths nobody talks about: The more victimized you seem, the more political leverage you have. But you cannot win the victimization Olympics without lots of plain hard work.

Two recent studies put to rest the complaint from the BLM crowd about police 'racism' in the shooting deaths of black Americans.

Putting statistics aside, is it true that police killings of African Americans are driven by racial bias—by white police officers with a Jim-Crow mindset who view blacks as less than human? A new study by a group of American researchers offers some insight, and suggests that the conventional narrative is misleading.

Lead researcher David Johnson, psychologist and postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland, led a team that analyzed police shootings in America by building a database of 917 fatal officer-involved shootings (FOIS) from over 650 different police departments in 2015. They looked at both the race of the police officers doing the shooting and the races of the individuals killed. If America had an epidemic of white-on-black police shootings, you would expect that white police officers would be more likely to shoot African Americans. But that isn’t what they found.

Instead, they found that when the data is sorted according to the race of the involved officers, “as the percentage of black officers who shot in a FOIS increased, a person fatally shot was more likely to be black…than white. As the percentage of Hispanic officers who shot in a FOIS increased, a person fatally shot was more likely to be Hispanic…than white.” It is actually more likely for black and Hispanic citizens to be killed by black and Hispanic police officers than by white officers.

The Death of Merit and the Race to Mediocrity in Our Increasingly Marxist Universities

The television series “The Enemy Within” begins by informing the viewer that there are 100,000 foreign spies in the United States working to undermine and destabilize America. China has sent hundreds of thousands of students to America to gain maximum access to the West’s advanced knowledge and technology, some through education alone, some through espionage.

While the foreign threat is real and serious, it pales beside the internal threat represented by the North American education complex. There are 756,900teachers and professors in Canada, and 5.2 million in the U.S. Almost all of these professors and teachers are daily resolutely and relentlessly attacking Western culture, rejecting American culture, and advocating cultural Marxism.

How did this come about? During the 1960s and 1970s, two converging social movements transformed the culture of education. One was the adoption of Marxism by a wide range of North American university professors in the social sciences and humanities. The other was the widespread adoption of feminist theory. Together, Marxism and feminism redefined North American society as a hierarchy of oppression, with white, patriarchal capitalists at the top, and poor lesbians of color at the bottom. All citizens were redefined as members of racial, economic, gender, sexual, and ethnic classes, with people of white oppressing people of color, males oppressing females, rich oppressing poor, heterosexuals oppressing LGBTQ++, Christians and Jews oppressing Muslims, and so on. This approach is called “social justice” theory.
