Ottawa says Ontario's call to drop retaliatory tariffs would mean 'surrender'

This is indeed the stuff that civil wars are made of, the only missing ingredient is the economic ruination of the nation by its own dysfunctional hand.

This however is being prevented by the Americans, who have been propping Canada up since 1918

Not as the 51st State mind you, simply Giant Puerto Rico, that being preferable to the Americans as opposed to Venezuela North.

That being said, if Canada persists on the far left trajectory it is on now, the Americans will incite Venezuela North and then depose it, installing a friendlier regime in its place.

Which is fine by me, come and free me,  Uncle Abe; glory, glory, hallelujah.

Why would Canadians want a less safe, more redneck, less harmonious society?  You may want that as a gun-totin’ sycophant of quasi-fascism. I’m with the snowflakes.

The Snowflakes enjoy the protection of the American constitution, they just  can't do anything about the first and second amendments, because snowflakes are not prepared to kill and die for anything, and deposing the American constitution would require a war and they would have to win that war.  Ergo; snowflakes, so what?

Canadians are prepared to die to protect freedom as they have done time and again in the past.  Don’t confuse that with adventurist meddling.  I won’t deny that we’ve danced with the devil that way either.  It can be hard to avoid unnecessary foreign entanglements.

I am not opposed to foreign entanglements, entangle as you like, I am even available for conscription if need be, I did the battle fitness test last week, still gold standard for a twenty year old, never mind a man of my age.

Trudeau government is granting more tariff relief to import American products, undermining his campaign against Trump tariffs against Canada.

Further than that, the Trudeau government is far less transparent about tariffs/process compared to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce.

Trudeau is weak on the trade file.  He should be fighting the steel and aluminum tariffs and say that Canada is out of USMCA unless the tariffs are removed.  It’s disgusting that 40% of Chinese steel producers have been exempted from US tariffs but only 2% of Canadian steel producers have been exempted. Trump’s mistreatment of Canada is unbelievable.  He favours China and other dictatorships over democratic allies.  What a jerk.

Agreed...Trudeau is weak on trade and Trump is a fabulous jerk for upsetting the trade status quo...one reason he was elected.

Trudeau and Freeland unwisely chose to pick and choose tariffs on products they thought would bring the most pressure against GOP states/exports, only to realize that it has been very ineffective.   Canadians can focus their anti-Trump ire against steel/aluminum tariffs, but Americans are not so concentrated on the impact of tariffs on 229 products, from strawberry jam, pizza, whiskies to an arcane list of plated metal products and ingots.

So now we learn that Trudeau's tariffs are having far less impact than desired, and more may be necessary, even as exemptions are granted.

Trudeau and Canada are learning by empirical means just what the CanAm trade relationship is and has been for decades.

Advantage Trump....

This is why Canada must diversify trade away from the US, grow its population, and become more independent by creating a domestic market that supports the manufacturing of a wide range of goods from all sectors. In the long run it makes Canada more open to non-US influences and offers other countries the same access to our resources and market that the US has.  If the US is relying on Canada for oil, fresh water, and other resources for its long term survival, it is essentially undermining that security by encouraging Canada to look to other partners.  Expect more trade deals like CETA.  The US has become a less reliable, more expensive, and more belligerent trading partner.

Agreed...Canada should never have let itself become so dependent on the U.S. export market and American foreign direct investment.   The U.S. is far less dependent on Canada as has been discussed many times before.    The U.S. is the same as it ever was....long before Trump.
