Fake News in the US

Recommended Posts

In this day and age, with so many people having access to so much information, it's really easy to catch up on companies like the NYT when they put out a fake news article.

It's no big deal for them. They can do a big front page smear and then a small-print retraction a few pages back a couple of days later. Somehow it keeps the narrative going for them even when they're caught in a lie. Two years of "collusion", the Kavanaugh story and now Kavanaugh 2.0, obstruction, etc, etc. For some reason people still buy their paper just like they keep tuning in to CNN.

Here's the thing though. 20 years ago almost no one could fact check most of this stuff. Whatever the NYT belched out, the rest of the MSM gobbled up. We all just thought "that's the news" and got on with our lives.

Was their track record always such a huge joke? Have they just been BS'ing at this rate for this whole time and just got busted half as often? Would Kavanaugh have been borked if this most recent joke had happened 20 yrs ago?

Probably not, as just 20 years ago the NYT would have acted more responsibly than now.   There has been a precipitous decline in standards and business model survival at the NYT and other major market newspapers that fight to remain viable in a new media environment.   Many others have just folded (massive losses in ad revenue and subscribers).

There has been a consistent trend of journalism scandals at the NYT over the past 20 years, with the slow bleed of publishing standards.

"Fake news" fills an expanding vacuum of internet based media that is never satisfied.   A man named Donald Trump recognized this opportunity and ran with it all the way to the U.S. presidency.

Are you saying that you think Trump ran for President with the "Fake News" slogan?

I don't think he had a problem with fake news at the beginning of his campaign. IMO he had a problem with his own crass, boorish comments that probably should have run him off the ballot. The one about Meghan Kelly bleeding from her eyeballs and whatever was just atrocious but there were many more.

If CNN would have put more focus on the actual things that came out of his mouth instead of being a hypocrite about his affairs (they let Bill off the hook, completely) and then lying about things that he didn't actually say or do, then they probably could have accomplished their mission. And make no mistake, CNN has been on a mission from day 1.

Donald Trump purposely took advantage of media machines that had already undermined their own credibility years earlier (e.g. Dan Rather's fake documents v. President Bush on CBS news in 2004).   Trump knew that he could overcome any of his past and present sins by pointing the finger right back at the news media, and by doing so, generate enormous volumes of free coverage, suffocating all his opponents in the media space.  It worked better than even he imagined it could.

Trump understood the power of media and how to manipulate it, even better than Reagan.    Hillary Clinton ran from the media while Donald Trump had sex with it, and they loved it for more eyeballs and clicks.   Fake news was/is a Trump slogan, and it remains to be seen if the strategy works again in 2020, now that his methods are obvious.

People who continue to react to Trump's purposeful antics with their own media hysterics just feed him more oxygen.

If he was running against JFK or RFK, he'd be in trouble.

Against the McGovernist left wing kooks of the Democrat Party however, not so much.

He's being propped up by the backlash against the Hippies, same as Nixon was.

Like Nixon, Trump is a liberal, he stole the Democrats platform and took the center, when the Democrats veered off to the far left to become the Tranny Commies.

The GOP is not a conservative party per se, the GOP has a liberal wing;  Dutch Reagan was a New Dealer Democrat.

I think you misread the whole story here. There was no fake news. NYT only dropped part of story (she don't remember and it was a second-hand information). Media has no obligation to be honest or to report the news; It only has to report the narrative. People (CNN, 2020 dems candidates) who grabbed the story and ran with it without FC it first were the problem.
