Long time co-host of Hockey Night in Canada and former Boston Bruins coach Don Cherry was fired from Sportsnet for referring to immigrants who don’t where poppies for Remembrance Day as “you people.”   The comment was seen by most people as derogatory, but should he have lost his job over it?   Cherry has made controversial remarks in the past, yet he has also said many supportive things about soldiers, Indigenous people, and people suffering from diseases and injuries.  He has also done valuable charity work.

As a hockey icon and much loved staple of hockey commentary, does Cherry’s poor judgement in some remarks on a subject near to his heart, respect for veterans, outweigh his positive traits?  Is the moral condemnation of this 85 year-old, expressed through his firing, the best way to address his inappropriate comments?  What was Cherry trying to call out, unsuccessfully?  Were his comments simply “despicable”, as Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie described them, or are they more human and common than we wish to admit?  Is there a middle ground where those who fall short of righteous expression can make amends and grow without being cast out?

No the guy has freedom of speech, we don't fire people, just because we find one thing the day was offensive.

Imagine if we had that kind of Tyranny on MapleleafWeb... Most of use would be kicked out, and this site would collapse.

You know what makes this a great place? Freedom of expression.

You can't fire people because they say something offensive. This is a democracy.

We do have exceptions for hate speech.

So if he said something like "We should have the KKK teach them a lesson". I think that would be a strong enough case. If you promote the physical harm of minority, that can be grounds for hate speech.

What Don Cheery said isn't even close to meeting the threshold of hate speech. I hope Don Cheery sues, because going against free speech is a slippery slope.

If they go after him, what stops them from going after one of us next?

I teach 5 classes at colleges and universities which is 95 percent new Canadians and never have I seen a student wear a poppy. Does it make me evil to say that?

O wow.... A university professor? You could be a great asset. I didn't think the professors spent time on the forums.

I've been kicked off twitter trying to wake up the professors.

I know he’s rough around the edges and has said some inappropriate things, but I can’t imagine Hockey Night in Canada without him.  His firing feels wrong.  What he said wasn’t right and he should correct it, but I don’t think Sportsnet appreciates the love and respect Canadians feel for Cherry.  It’s sad how disposable people are in the court of public opinion.  This cowardly and disloyal move by Sportsnet diminishes my interest in their presentation of NHL hockey.

More power to them, I don't wear one anymore neither,  I have no respect  for the Liberal Party of Canada Flag, nor the Liberal Party of Canada song,

Nor the Liberal Party of Canada Revisionist Day.

The first step in divesting yourself of this Post National State, is to divest yourself of it in the heart.

Well it's the 'you people' not at fault. It's the Trudeau family we can thank for that. Our resources will be deprived in no time. Third world immigrants would not appreciate hockey or wearing a Poppy! But immigration does suck up our free health care and strain on police services, welfare and housing. 400,000 more coming in! Yippee

I have been in hockey rinks since the age of 2, watching my grand father, dad, husband and daughter all play. Hockey is truly Canadian and Don Cherry is a awesome entertainer. It's a shame what's happening :( And the truth is, all these years in hockey rinks (over 50) I never seen a Turban or Hijab in the arena. So I'm a confused Canadian.

No he should not be fired.

You haven't seen a Turban at a hockey rink in over 50 years?

He wasn't fired because he offended hockey fans. He was fired because the network honchos were terrified that THEY would be attacked for being less than woke if they didn't fire him. And for the most party you can't work in the mainstream media in Canada, even behind the scenes, if you're accused of being anything other than desperately progressive. Callout culture now, as implemented by the authoritarian Left, does not tolerate the slightest utterance of politically incorrect thoughts. Anyone they catch doing so gets mobbed, and if they're immune to it then the mob goes after their employer.

Most of the people who are bothered by what he said never watch hockey and never will anyway. Nor do they wear poppies. Nor are they immigrants. They're entitled, relatively well-off white liberals wallowing in their own smug sense of moral superiority.

Mother Canada is dead.   And she's not coming back.

Thus from now on, for 11-11-11 ;  I shall replace poppy with Armband, Funereal, Black.

I guess if they don't watch hockey, they're all Raptors fans. "We the North" is responsible for Justin Trudeau's re-election. You couldn't pay me to go to a Raptors Game, because they are a bunch of snobby liberal sheep.

We should replace "We the North". With "We the Invaders"

I read what he said.

Quote

“You people... love our way of life, love our milk and honey. At least you could pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada.”

Ron MacLean nodded and gave a thumbs up.

And that's it. Fired.

Here's the video. Maybe we can chip in a couple of bucks for his lawyer.

At 2:45 The Muzzie is bashing Don Cherry for not going to war, and is blaming sportsnet for their "lack of Gender-Parity at all in terms of commentators".

Welcome to outsiders giving their F'n opinions.

Hey c’mon. I love the Raptors.  Don’t make this a black-white thing.  Most blacks aren’t fooled by self-congratulatory liberals who think they don’t have a racist or biased bone in them.  I always found it ironic how the liberals and champagne socialists tried to paint Rob Ford as racist, yet Ford actually hung out with and liked blacks.  He was at home in predominantly black neighbourhoods and made a point of visiting people to address their needs.  That gets overlooked because Ford lacked social graces.  He was a “deplorable.”   That’s why I can’t buy into any political party.  Hypocrites all...

How many people in that crowed do you think are patriots that voted for Andrew Scheer or Max Bernier.

Nah they hate Doug Ford... because they want a bunch of Free Crap for the government. A bunch of useless parasites if ya ask me.

Most major league sports patrons in Toronto are corporate.  The reality is that there’s still more poverty among non-whites than whites.  It’s evening out and I certainly don’t think more affirmative action is necessary.  At least now the players are seeing much more of the wealth.

I just find it ironic that many of the whites calling out racism do it more for show and political reasons rather than because they actually mix with other ethnicities.  How many of them celebrate black athletes but won’t date them?  Actions always speak louder than words.

I know Cherry would treat a soldier or hockey player of any colour with respect, but because he isn’t as polished in his speech, he gets dumped on.  I wonder how many black friends Bonnie Crombie has?

https://www.google.ca/amp/s/torontosun.com/news/local-news/warmington-don-cherry-fired-over-controversial-poppy-comment/amp

“I have just learned I’ve been fired by Sportsnet for comments made on Coach’s Corner Nov. 9,” Cherry told me in a phone interview. “No problem.”

Cherry added: “I know what I said and I meant it. Everybody in Canada should wear a poppy to honour our fallen soldiers.”

And Cherry said his words were not racial or bigoted but patriotic and respectful of our troops.

Criticism of the show's content often focuses on Don Cherry, who has made several controversial statements during his live on-air segments.[94] Some of his proclamations on the show have been criticized for insulting Quebecois and European players, some of whom he has regarded as "soft".[95]He has stated that Americans are ruining the NHL.[96]Despite these controversies, Cherry's popularity among English Canadians endures.

I dont think he really cares anyway. It will be interesting to see the new "coaches corner" on saturday.

I just hate their culture. It's ghetto trash. It's so anti-intellectual and backwards.

Just look at hip hop music.

How did the go from this

No I have not. It's about two years that I've been to a local game and a year for a NHL game ... never seen one? Not that there would be anything wrong with that, but the tweets and people on the news against Cherry, many are in Turbans or Muslim. So I just think it's funny. How can you appreciate Don Cherry?

Have you seen one? Where?
