Why Can'T They Give A Straight LOGICAL Answer?

I'm a senior so yes, scared of getting it, hubby is a few years older, I doubt we would survive it and it's a hard way to go.  we are on our own, kids can't get to us as they don't have cars, so yeah, I won't go shopping without a mask, which we can't get.

My biggest worry is my dog.  If my partner and I ended up in hospital or worse, I don't know what would happen with him because nobody but as can get near him. The other dog wouldn't be a problem, though she'd miss us.

Glad you are staying home and doing what you can to stay safe, sorry if my other post gave a different impression.

Well, I ain't no doctor, but the U.S. Navy taught me a lot about airborne particulates and contamination.   We had protective breathing gear that was a lot more potent than N95 masks and respirators.    Plus it was radioactive.   And it wasn't hair.

Radioactivity does not spred the virus does and clearly you did not retain much about airborne particulates from viruses.

Look....we have provided the "cites" that support airborne transmission.

You have provided nothing but pretend expertise in viral transmission.

I choose to believe common sense and published studies instead of your assertions to the contrary.

Nothing in what you read said you would breath in the virus after it remained in the air three hours. That is an illogical and nonsensical assumption you derived from what you think airborne means. Because I point that out while you play immunology expert and I repudiated your false assumption you claim I initiated your medical conclusion and play doctor. I do not, I limit myself to pointing out your alleged publication never said the assumptions you make.

I also state Betsy and you need to understand that the info you are given is not contradictory just not understood by you the same reason you think assume all tigers are wild. You assume. Your assumption has become entrenched religious gospel. Its not based on science but your fear of dying.

Think. If the air was lethal as you said the entire population would have had it by now. Common sense alone would tell you that.

Not all fear is bad..I never argued it was...it is one of many false assumptions being made on this thread..you are damn right about fear and precisely because of what you say..I challenge ignorance on this thread about airborne pathogens...  then again explaining this virus is  no different than explaining to a wife how she got syphilis from her husband. I have done that. You get resistance of course when you tell them how it was spread...the resistance is the greatest the more myths they believe in about their husband of course.

That is some good advice for you there Scibblet.

Please take a look at Sweden, they are the polar opposite of most approaches, common sense freedom with no lock-downs.

The fear can be all-encompassing, especially with today's media equating shock with revenue.

Keep it simple, go for walks, say hi to the neighbors/plants/birds.

There is, still, no lockdown there. Shopping centres remain open, as are most schools and firms. Many work from home, many don't – all are at liberty to choose. When I called a friend in Stockholm to ask about the Swedish experiment, he was on his way to a book launch. He's still taking his sons to football matches and is proud that Sweden is keeping calm and carrying on. To him there is no Swedish experiment: it's the rest of Europe that is experimenting – by locking down economies in response to a virus which may prove to be no more deadly than flu.

I get it Rue, the social media is full of false info, all with it's own very real looking sources, ....And it needs to be proven wrong or taken down, much like the whole stocking up on toilet paper , it swept the entire country, across several nations.... and when you asked WHY....they all said it's because the virous..... one could only  guess if you stuff your ass with enough paper you'll be protected some how.. I not sure what drove them to toilet paper, but it was a genus marketing strategy on someone's behalf, the nation has more shit paper stock piled for the next pandemic than anything they really need... ........… As for masks, they are extra protection not for us so much, but for others around us, keeps our spittle and water droplets inside the mask as I understand it. just one more layer of defense or protection, like a seat belt....

And while there are people who are have to much fear, there are more that do not have any fear, or respect for this pandemic, like you said education with the right info is key...... some Nations are producing disinformation about the virous, such as china, and at some points even our own government were giving bad info to back up their own policies and decisions  I know we are all 10 feet tall and bullet proof...and more people are going to survive this , than people who are not. but we are not all supermen....someone has to make up those stats we all see on the news, those that have the virous , those that have died from it, and those that have survived...

Now some nations are reporting that china's reported deaths are way to low, and they were not forth coming with all their info they had, and that the virous dates back as far as November...and other nations are not counting all the deaths as virous related.... I think some where in the middle is the truth

While Sweden has decided to handle this in another way, not all of Sweden's medical experts agree with their approach...in fact many medical people are urging their government to change that to be more in line with the rest of Europe....This approach has yet to be proven as the right or wrong , this whole pandemic is not over yet...and things can change very rapidly... Governments are not infallible ask the people of Sweden how their social experiment is going with their new migrants they took in...

Sorry, but the "science" says otherwise.    There is a difference between droplets and aerosols and the time they remain airborne.

You clearly refuse to understand the obvious.

Whether influenza viruses can be transmitted by respiratory aerosols has been a central issue in the argument about appropriate PPE for influenza. The evidence will not be reviewed in this commentary; however, the CDC, the Institute of Medicine, and other researchers have found that influenza can be transmitted through the inhalation of infectious aerosols.

....Aerosols are emitted not only by "aerosol-generating procedures,"[19] but may also be transmitted whenever an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks, or exhales. Pathogens transmitted by respiratory aerosols can travel short or long range from the source depending on the size and shape of the particles, the initial velocity (eg, cough vs exhalation), and environmental conditions (eg, humidity, airflow).

It seems like everyone here still hasn't realized that your president's and PM's plans are still herd immunity.Which means sacrifice a small portion of population to get the majority of population immune. The current shutdown measure is just to slow down,  I mean slow down but not stop the virus spreading, so the medical system won't be overwhelmed. If they wanted to stop the virus they would economically pay far higher price like China, which they didn't want to pay. This is why your governments's reactions against the virus was, are  and will always be "too late, to little". Financially getting rid of old population isn't bad for your governments. Dead men needn't receive pension which may resolve the financial problems which every so called civilized nation suffers. This is the game of Resident Evil in real world.

I currently live in ON and work for an American company. The job isn't essential at all but the company made it essential by....using 3M for example (it isn't 3M):

CEO: We produce medical masks, we are essential.

ON Premier: Of course you are. Please keep your factories fully operational and make as many products as possible, thank you!

CEO turned to MBA: This idiot even doesn't know our factories in ON only produce 3M hockey tapes...LOL

So everyone just relax. I'm with you. let's just follow governmental guidelines and eat virus....I mean, don't eat the virus from spit of ICU patients. It's deadly for sure. Just eat the half-dead virus on the handles of Walmart/Costco shopping carts, holding bars of TTC buses, door knobs of your office/factory/store buildings and letters from government to instruct American/Canadian how to protect yourself from the virus...and get us all herd immune without becoming dead men.

I know nothing of your (Betsy) personal circumstances so I do not presume to tell you what to do. However, for myself, I rely on that old civil service question, "Is this trip neccessary?"

Well - that one day a week you do your groceries could be just the day you happen to be  6 feet from an asymptomatic person, who sneezed into his arm a tad too late!   The effort of staying home the full 6 days of that freakin week becomes all for naught!

And like I said, the breeze/wind factor should be considered how far airborne virus can reach!

6 feet may not be the magic number!   Being told to physically distance at 6 feet.......lulls you into false security that  at 6 ft, you are unreachable!

My concern about a mask is if it were to get contaminated, you need to remove it without touching it immediately. If your mask gets contaminated by someone's infected sneeze, the virus will still infect you through your eyes unless you are wearing goggles as well. If you sneeze, chances are, you will touch your face.

Each to his/her own. If a mask makes you feel better, that's good. Just be careful.

If one is in the habit of touching her face - the mask is more likely to serve as a reminder NOT TO!

Lol.   Believe me, the mask has its unique way to remind you it is there.......... plastered on your face!

Betsy we do. No one down plays this. Please do not take my comments as insulting. They are intended with utmost respect to address your fears. Its what we do on the forum talk them out..with respect..I do not ridicule you..I respectfully talk with you..never to dictate...the doctor you find confusing speaks with variables...she  sounds confusing because she can not give you absolute answers..she tries to explain ranges of  containment options..no one can guarantee masks make you safer in absolute terms.

The air will not kill you and washing your hands and practicing physical distance will help you... and you reading up on viruses will not scare you...the  more you read the more you will understand which will shrink the fear..the Devil in your terms feeds on your fear and grows..take away the fear by reading up and Satan shrivels away like a ballon losing its air..

No you miss the point Betsy..I would have already first learned about the tiger to know if it was tame or wild. I would assume of course under certain conditions a tiger is wild and dangerous but simply assuming it will at me because its wild is not helpful...we have the gift to learn about the tiger and instead of fearing it learn to respect it  and not automatically assume we will be eaten by it.

We have to move past  primal fear of being eaten to avoid being eaten. That is what scientists and doctors are doing and we need to be practice patience in the interim.

Its bloody ironic patients and patience sound the same. They are in this case.

I do get your point. I am not telling you can not fear the virus..I am arguing defuse the fear with seeing how we learn to contain the tiger.

There are no killer germs hanging in the air  outside  waiting for  your nose or mouth  to accidentally  walk into ..the  chance of droplets moving in the air past 6 feet landing on  you is like trying to equate  the chance  of a meteorite hitting you.  This is why you are told to distance 6 feet.

Canada’s top doctor says wearing non-medical masks ‘sensible’ in certain situations

Canada’s chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, said it’s “sensible” at this stage to wear non-medical masks in cases where practising physical distancing isn’t always possible, such as when riding public transit or shopping for groceries, but it should not be used as a substitute for the public-health measures being taken.

https://www.hilltimes.com/2020/04/07/politics-this-morning-412/242436

It's like pulling teeth, isn't it?

As I've explained here - that's where I wear my mask - when shopping for my groceries!

Quote

She said the shift in advice stemmed from a recognition that the virus can also be transmitted asymptomatically, though it remains unclear to what extent patients who aren’t exhibiting signs are responsible for the spread in the community.

Lol again.

As I've pointed out in the OP:

HOW THE HECK DO I  KNOW IF SOMEONE IS ASYMPTOMATIC

For all we know.....I COULD BE CARRYING THE VIRUS (ASYMPTOMATIC), AND I WOULDN'T KNOW IT EITHER!

If you don't have any symptoms - how the heck would you even know you're sick?

DUH?

That's why we all should wear masks!  Assume that we could be sick!

It's better to err on the side of caution!

Capisce?

No, the shaming is scornful.  Pushing the false sense of security of masks for everyone combined with dangling the dubious hope of pharmaceuticals and the growing expectation that workers accept being expendable in the war to save the economy is what worries me.  Not so much for the idiots that buy into this but for the effect this would have on making a bad medical situation exponentially worse for those us with more sense.  If there's any one single thing that has spread this virus faster and farther than anything else it's been a false sense of security.

That said people are being sucked into believing simply walking past a breathing person is dangerous now.  If it's that bleeding transmissible then going outside for any reason whatsoever is the wrong thing to do.

So....just stay the **** at home.

Complete nonsense.  We can’t completely shut down society for an indefinite period of time over a virus that at most has a 2% mortality rate.  Keep taking at face value what your government overseers keep telling you.  Maybe they’ll let you out to see the sun once a week!  Meanwhile other countries, like Denmark have already scheduled when small businesses, big businesses and schools will open back up.

Complete hyperbole.  In the 1st place the economy is NOT completely shut down. Secondly, Denmark hasn't announced anything that even comes close to the suggestions coming from the more hard-boiled idiots we have on this side of the pond, like sacrificing the elderly in the war to save the economy.  https://theweek.com/articles/902582/conservatives-who-sacrifice-elderly-save-economy

Denmark is tentatively opening a few day-cares and schools so parents still working now can get a little closer to normal but all other restrictions including gathering sizes bigger than ten people remain in effect until May 10th with a ban on larger gatherings until August.  https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2020/04/06/world/europe/06reuters-health-coronavirus-denmark.html

You want to rush off to the front to save the economy Shady you go right ahead. You don't have to worry about getting back to let us know how it works out for you we'll watch and see what happens from back here.

It’s shut down for millions of Canadians that are out of work, with no end in sight.  I’m not for sacrificing the elderly.  High risk people should remain indoors and practice significant quarantine.  But I’m also not for destroying the lives of millions of people either.  But you keep listening to your government overlords!

Absolute nonsense. Support for EI, CERB and small business and even summer student employment have been planned for assuming a 4 month window.  Gee look that's August. What a coincidence that August features so prominently in Denmark's estimations too.

No. It's patently clear that listening to government overlords kills more people. Especially when they're from Beijing or Washington.

There is nothing in the 2nd article you've now barfed up that comes even remotely close to the call to economic jihad the fucking idiots you follow are suggesting.

I also noted your 2nd article mentioned that rising infections in Sweden next door to Denmark is causing them to doubt the wisdom of having followed their laissez-faire approach to the virus.  Interesting also that Denmark was one of the first EU countries to institute a lock down of their economy.  I think its safe to say Denmark is a chickenshit country full of slackers like Canada and not the fearless warriors you've tried to depict in the 'point' you're trying to make.

Pushing the security of maintaining 6 feet of distancing (and washing of hands) as the ONLY means of stopping the rapid spread of this virus, is giving a false sense of security!

What you guys are missing - or, wilfully dismissing - is the fact that no one here is advocating wearing a mask IN LIEU of distancing/washing of hands!  I'm saying:  Wearing a mask provides an ADDED protection!

ADDITIONAL PROTECTION!

WHAT IS FREAKIN' WRONG WITH THAT?

Even Tam changed her tune:

Quote

https://www.hilltimes.com/2020/04/07/politics-this-morning-412/242436

Some grocery stores do not enforce the safe distancing inside the store!  Bulk Barn really takes it a step farther -  but that's to protect their inventory and their staff.   That's okay.

Speaking of store clerks - they are at the front-line too.  The clerks on the floor stocking shelves or cleaning spills - they are out there with the public!  They should be protected from the public.

You guys better understand what is being said.  I think some of you are merely giving knee-jerk responses without giving any thought at all at what is being said!

And you folks wonder why I have to resort to super large and colored fonts?

The attempt to shame came from those folks who felt that people advocating for masks ought to be shamed!   Go ahead - review the discussion!   What I did was merely show that they are arguing from ignorance!
