This has been going on for decades you say? Where's the downside again? Are you kidding me? It's illegal, for good reason. US and Canadian companies put in the money and resources for all the R&D to invent the IT and whatever else, and then the Chinese just steal it and reap the benefits without paying the R&D costs and patents etc. They're free-riding. If you want to hurt and even put Canadian & US companies out of business to save a few bucks at Walmart while making a totalitarian country that wants to dominate the world richer, great. https://nationalpost.com/news/exclusive-did-huawei-bring-down-nortel-corporate-espionage-theft-and-the-parallel-rise-and-fall-of-two-telecom-giants

I'm being a little facetious and I can see what you're saying but I wouldn't be surprised to learn at least some of these aggrieved US and Canadian companies move to or are already in China so who are the real victims of this theft? The vast ocean of consumers or a handful of people/companies/shareholders involved in R&D and generating patent's and profits? I want to keep these companies here so we can employ our own while hopefully putting pressure on a dictatorship to reform itself, you know that. It just seems pointless due to how many companies move to China to make themselves richer and make China's dictatorship more powerful in the process. I'm more concerned with making China less powerful but too many people are interested in producing and consuming shit as cheaply as possible to extract as much profit as possible. It just seems there are interests working at odds here and I don't really perceive any compelling reason to trust or care what happens to them. Again, I'm wondering about this from a point of view that's under near constant attempts to condition me to be more concerned about my own wallet than anything else and if at the end of the day cheap shit and the cheaper the better is all that really matters.
