Netflix: Queen's Gambit (in 3 paragraphs)

Recommended Posts

1. This series is a fake remake of Bobby Fischer's life - but Fischer remade as a woman because Netflix has a social agenda.

2. Chess? The movie mispresents chess moves as violent, taking a piece. In fact, most chess moves are silent - strategy moves.

3. The movie misrepresents how chess players think: Chess is a game of violence.

Nevertheless well made video, in Ontario, Canada I think.

Is something "fake" just because it's fiction? It's based on a novel that Netflix didn't write. There are no similarities between the fictional main character's story and Bobby Fischer's life, other than they are both Americans who are good at chess in the 1960s. I don't think you can really criticize Netflix for not telling the story of a real-life antisemitic paranoid asshole instead. I think the only social agenda in the film is to appease people who like to look at pretty young girls.

Yes, in 1914 a war started because of fiction - people's beliefs were far from reality.

More seriously, ordinary people believed the educated elite of the time.

To be honest, I wrote my OP before watching the final episode.

IMHO, Netflix (once again) botched it.

The Netflix version is a sappy politically correct, RomCom on fake CGI in "Moscow".

Bobby Fischer's End Game is much better. Check it out on wikipedia.

Leave it to this site to have a critical review of Queen's Gambit.

It was a brilliant miniseries.

It speaks to a time where people were way more intellectual than they appear to be now. You would actually care about international Chess players?

The idea that making a show about a woman in a man's world is somehow too woke is ridiculous.

What's refreshing is the people she encounters don't care she's a woman. The fact she's brilliant is enough.

The show is also decent at tackling substance abuse.

....

To any Russian, this movie/series is obviously fake.

To anyone who plays chess, this movie/series is obviously fake.

Yet, around the world, Netflix is popular with many people - women more than men.

My fear is when something becomes popular with men, and women.

I've never come upon a grown adult who doesn't understand how fiction works before. Incredible.

Fiction? Before 1914 and the collapse of the Brtitish Empire, Tsarist Russia and the Hapsburg Empire, both women and men avidly read Zola, Dickens, Tolstoi as people now watch Netflix.

They probably knew it was supposed to be fake too.
