People are getting their information from the government and the media. They believe what these two pillars of honesty tell us without questioning it. Question it. You say that the say that ICU wards are filling up with covid cases, I say they are not. Why don't you google the number of covid cases in our hospitals and the number of hospitals and then tell me I am wrong. You talk about the large number of seniors dying. This is true and unacceptable. I believe that the lockdowns forcing our seniors  to be isolated and sedentary is causing huge numbers to die. Show me where that is not true. I believe that if the government had spent $5B to $10B on bringing long term care homes up to world class standards, instead of $300B on paying  people not to work we could have saved many more lives. I am sure if you or your parents were among those 80 year olds, you would think there might be something worth doing.

There's what you wish could be, emotionally, and there's understanding nature. My own Dad died just about one year ago. Loved him of course. But I knew at the stage he was at that he preferred it, he wanted to pass. Not saying it is good or right, it just is reality at 80.

Hence, we need to really do something about death.

Nature is also a very different mistress for different people.  Until 3 years ago, my skiing partner was about as aggressive as you could be.  He was 95.  The hard falls caused him to stop going with me, but at 98 he will clearly explain to anyone who asks he intends to die at the hands of a jealous husband.  For someone who hasn't pissed his health away at the bar, the drugs including tobacco or eating themselves into blimp status 80 is just another step along the way.  I expect to still have my driving, racing and flying licenses when I get there.

The government and the mainstream media should be questioned. Everything should be questioned.

There is a capacity in hospitals when it comes to certain types of patients. There is a limited number of ventilators. Wards need to be closed off for COVID patients. These are issues that I feel comfortable validating as I have nurses and doctors who are relatives and friends of mine. There is a limit and many times, we have reached capacity in different areas of Canada. Alberta hospitals, for example, are reaching the red line as far as being able to treat COVID patients.

I do believe we need to learn from what happened. I don't agree that the same approach should be taken. At the same time, I'm not going to pretend that I know all of the layers and information that are involved in making decisions like this.

From my limited knowledge, I do question the approach of shutting everything down. Why not isolate/quarantine only those who are vulnerable or who work with the vulnerable? I absolutely agree that, instead of spending so much money on everyone, perhaps it's best to focus on those who need to be shielded.

The most important thing here is that we learn from all of this and better ourselves, if this were to happen again.

This is another example of where the dreadfully low credibility of our MSM comes back to bite us all in the ass.

They're literally the boy who cried wolf, and now we have no clue whether there's a wolf at our door or a butterfly when they shriek.

They may be in some places, but in Langley BC they didn't, at all. I know people who work in that hospital. C19 crickets....

My mom got either the flu or C19 this year. Most likely C19 because the stats tell us that 2.3 Bajillion Canadians got C19 and only 3 people got the flu (slight exaggeration) in 2020.

My mom's almost 80 and she didn't say it was a terrible flu. The recovery period after the main symptoms were gone lasted longer than usual. IE, a general lack of energy lasted about a week. She didn't see a Dr, my niece and sister just brought her a bunch of soup, etc.

In all fairness, the women on her side of the family all last into their mid-90's, so she is a very healthy near-80.

I can agree with almost everything you have said. Nice to hear a voice of reason amongst all the chaos and crazies. I would like our governments to to invest more in ventilators, I am sure that you could buy many for $300 Billion. If there are none available (which seems unlikely), then we should have had our finest engineers (say from Magna International, Bombardier or even our university engineering departments)  working on the problem when we first recognized it, and building a capacity to produce them here. If we need more space for intensive care units, why not make space available in empty hotel floors (there seems to be a lot of that), or community centers, or churches, or set up field hospitals for those with simpler needs, and reallocate the more well equipped space in our hospitals for ICU. I am so tired of people telling me all the problems involved in caring for our sick, instead of trying to do something about it. Don't tell me what we don't have, work with what we do have.

If it would get Quebec of the ROC tit, I would send the oars to Nfld tomorrow.

The answer to your question is WWII - sponsored by Wall Street.

Of course, you hit the nail right on the head when it comes to Arctic Sovereignty.  Instead of wasting time and money trying to fit NATO or other requirements, we need to shift our military and especially our reserves (obviously including Rangers) to a very serious, full court press to command Arctic Sovereignty.  Russia is the really big worry as they are already deciding how to develop OUR petroleum resources.

It did get noticed by the Harper government, he had big plans creating artic FOB's, buying Artic patrol ves, investing in more infra structure in the north. But it all fizzled out except we got stuck with those AOP ships, today the forces have delegated most artic tasks to some selected  Reserve units which exercise regularly in the artic... with little to no equipment... Mean while the regular army rarely put any effort into things like winter warfare training, it was all about Afghanistan and training the next roto to go over...everything else was put on the back burner.... you lose a lot of expertise by not practicing regularly, and those with that expertise have moved on or very rusty. Its one thing to train in wainwright in -45 degree weather, but the artic is a whole different ball game.

And one of the forces problems is it's focus changes with every government, which should be cemented into law, such as the size, and major roles, and budget. All locked in and protected by law, want to change it it has to be past through parliament and the senate, and have a major majority to pass, so one party could not just throw it in the dumpster like what happens today..

I agree with that.

All said, the extent that a lot of some of the conspiracy theories (that have been around, but are now being magnified because of the echo chambers of social media), have gone too far.

Like this whole COVID19 being a big, globalist hoax. For this to work, many people, at many levels need to be in on it. It is just not possible for so many people to be on a hoax like this.

The virus is real. People are dying. The ICU wards cannot handle beyond a number of people, who, because of COVID and their health, must be taken to the ICU. The large number of seniors dying is not like anything we have seen before. COVID19 is real.

Perhaps, we can argue that a different approach needs to be taken to respond... but to say that this is all a hoax, I find to be outrageous. I put this theory right there with people who believe the earth is flat.

Plus, besides Amazon and a few other companies, who does the lockdown benefit? If anything, the top 1% do not want disruptions in the system and the rat race that has been created. They want business as usual.

Well, it is not hard to see that you are a subscriber to the leftist liberal lying media machine alright. This China virus is not as bad as they make it out to be. It is just your average seasonal flu bug that comes around every year where thousands of people will get sick and many will die.

Event 201 told us all this was going to happen back in Oct. 2019 but yet the millions of fools out there still refuse to believe it. Check it out on the internet for yourself all knowing one and let me know what your opinion is on that Event. I bet that you will not. Will I be right?

And what is going on here according to the conspiracy crowd is that this Convid 19 hoax is now being used by the globalists to try and set up a communist globalist world where scum bags like Kiss"ass"inger and B. Gates to hell will reap the rewards at your peril. This has never been about the virus. This has always been about the communist globalists taken over the world. Conspiracy's do exist. I'd be ok with that, but NOT having a military comes at a cost as well , I know that snapped Canadians heads back.... How so Army guy, well who is going to look after our sovereignty, things like Hans island with out a military what is keeping Denmark from just claiming it,  Same as the passage through the artic ocean who patrols/ controls that, and who protects our 200 km limit off our coast, remember the turbot wars  ? where a foreign navy ship rammed a Canadian war ship trying to arrest a illegal fishing ves , who's to stop anyone from claiming land / resources in our artic. Shit a boat load of newfies could row across the straight and claim Quebec, in the name of Odin.. and nobody could stop them , perhaps a few Mountie's riding on caribou.

And what does it cost to have someone do that for us, not having a say in any sovereign decision?

What was the last conflict that Canada was involved with that was run by corporate America, can you name one ?

Canada does have a foreign policy with interest across the globe, who defends all of that... who evacuates Canadian citizens living in another country like Lebanon in times of crises...

I know to many questions, but if that is all you think our military does for you while you sleep in your bed every night your mistaken. our military is busy 365 days a year 24 hours a day. But I'm sure you already knew that...

Canada was placed on the road to destruction and death when communist old man Trudeau became the dictator of Canada in 1980. The first words out of his commie mouth were "welcome to the new Canada". What was he trying to tell us way back then? And with his commie punk kid in power today this communist globalist is now working to finish the job that is old man started. The Trudeau's have destroyed what was once a great British/European nation and they have both pretty much succeeded in turning Canada into a french third world socialist/communist hell hole.

If there are land disputes then take it up with the United Nations. I could careless about what goes on in the north of Canada and neither does Trudeau. Comrade Trudeau would do nothing to stop anyone from taken over any land that Canada may own up there in no mans land. The fool hates Canada.

But I suppose that you being from the Maritime's you are no doubt very happy that comrade Trudeau is the crime mistake of Canada, right? I bet that you do not even know that communist China has Chinese troops in Canada, now did you? Source: Rebel News.

Why are they here practicing military maneuvers on Canadian soil anyway? What? To help us save our sorry asses from Trump's America?

We have gone a bit off topic here but do not try and tell me that comrade Trudeau will use the military to save Canada. Comrade Trudeau, like his old man, despises the military.

So, I have a question for you. Why do we have to wear a mask and practice social distancing at the same time? Isn't the wearing of a mask supposed to be good enough to save us all from getting this dreaded China virus from each other?

We are told that the wearing of a mask will protect us from each others saliva Covid infected droplets. And why do we have to cover our noses with a mask. No one that I know of talks thru their nose?

You need to stop watching brainwashing TV news hour programs where all they pretty much do all day long is talk Covid-Covid-Covid.  It's just another way of keeping people like you in a constant state of fear and panic. If everyone would just stop listening to the lying and fake media for awhile this Convid 19 hoax would disappear very quickly. It's your lying politicians and the lying media and the people who listen to that lying media that keep this charade going. Woke up, will you. ;)

I see by the messaging today that we are to "speak out" when we see our colleagues performing salacious acts of non-physical distancing, and when there are too many people at one family gathering.

In other words rat out your neighbours and friends, be a good little government chivato.

You think the UN , has the power to make someone do anything, How is that working for Putin and Ukraine

The only Chinese military personal in Canada are those attached to the Chinese embassy, and if you where following the news you'll know that scheduled exercise were canceled by the CDS, over advice given to him by several of our allies, who were not happy about it... I'm sure the CDS was not to happy either that the liberal government agree to anything as stupid as sharing our winter warfare techniques with the Chinese, The liberals did not seek out the advice of the military, on the consequences over such a stunt.

Not that anyone cares anyway, do you hear the uproar of Canadians over the prospect of training the Chinese, either do I .... Your a prime example of how caring every Canadians is right now....you don't care about the artic, you ever wants it can have it....

Yet it was upon the Canadian nation that Trudeau inflicted his greatest harm.  When Pierre Trudeau was elected prime minister in 1968, Canada faced a small but  militant separatist challenge in Quebec. In 1970, that challenge erupted in  terrorist violence: two kidnappings and a murder of one of the kidnapped  hostages, Quebec cabinet minister Pierre Laporte.

Trudeau responded with overwhelming force, declaring martial law in Quebec,  arresting dozens of people, almost none of whom had any remote connection to the  terrorist outrages. The arrests radicalized them, transforming many from  cultural nationalists into outright independentists. As he did throughout his  career, Trudeau polarized the situation — multiplying enemies for himself and,  unfortunately, also for Canada.

That's pretty dodgy, but I'm a conservative so I'm ok with a leader who's tough on terrorism.

PET was a disaster from a western POV. He was just as adept at targeting the Alberta economy and protecting/moving jobs east as his son is.

One of PET's programs that you never hear about anymore is the the tax scam he put on beef/cattle in order to force meat processing plants to move from Alberta to Ontario. They put put punitive taxes on processed beef shipped eastwards, and put no tax on cattle on the hoof being shipped in that direction. It was nothing short of being a direct attack on Alberta jobs.

Under PET's National Energy Policy the number of bankruptcies per day in Alberta was in the thousands.

My parents were offered to just take over the mtg payments on a house in St Albert and they would own it outright but they had just bought their own home and couldn't afford it. We know another couple who bought 4 lowboy trailers for a few hundred dollars at an auction. They rented those out for decades afterwards. It was like getting a license to print money.

Talk about assassinating PET was quite common back then. I don't know if Jr gets the same treatment. I live in BC and there's no such talk out here.

Why don't you use specific numbers instead of dealing in generalities.  You are at a computer, why not educate yourself. There are 742 hospitalizations in Alberta 137 of these are in ICU. Of course this is not good, but there would have been less if lock downs had not flattened the curve. If the hospitals are at capacity it is because of mismanagement not because there  are on average 4.6 patients per hospital, 0.85 in ICU. Of course it is better not to have a virus, only immunity will help with that.  Flattening the curve only means people get sick tomorrow instead of today, wake up people it is now tomorrow.  Why not open your eyes before your mouth. Your best hope of seeing a simpleton is to find a mirror. There are 5,890 Albertans locked down for every one in ICU , that may make sense in your world, but is not good for the future of the province. Lock downs mean  more people with covid today, not less.

If everyone is on lock down , how is this virus spreading, maybe its all those elves you got in Alberta or maybe people just don't give a f***  The first wave went down pretty easy, because it was new, and everyone was scared, today they are tired of Corvid, and don't care...

The large number of seniors dying is not like anything we have seen before.

And yet, all seniors die. We have never, ever seen one who has not died. So the question is, is it abnormal for them to die.

Graph showing the number of "excess deaths" over the past year or so, compared to an average. It is dangerous for me to show this, because we all know what averages do. Well, some of us do. When comparing raw data to an average, the average has been "smoothed out". That is what average essentially means. Hence statistics are the Devil, especielly when misinterpreted by unmathematical rodentia of the long-eared kind.

Excess Deaths Associated with COVID-19

Note those figures are for all deaths where a person had Covid-19.

CDC also acknowledges elsewhere on its site:

Table 3 shows the types of health conditions and contributing causes mentioned in conjunction with deaths involving coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). For 6% of the deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned. For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 2.9 additional conditions or causes per death.
