OT: I would have preferred seeing Martin drunk at a state dinner though.

That video provides a small glimpse into one aspect of the Ottawa world. (I always thought the National Press dinner was not for public consumption but maybe I have that wrong.)

In any case, this is how Canada's political elite amuses itself.

Keep in mind that most of the people there depend on our tax money for their livelihood.

There was much mockery in her speech, it mocked the institution, quibble over semantics and the politics with her hiring and it was written that way. I mean where do you get off saying you were hired because you are "hot" and now "passionate"

My wife thought she was adorable. I thought she was plastered. Still, the 'press gallery dinner' isn't an important event as far as 'Governing' goes (either for the feds or for the GG), more like a celebrity roast.

I mean where do you get off saying you were hired because you are "hot" and now "passionate"
RB, that speech was written for her by a gov't speech writer. They made reference to the fact in one of the accompanying videos (about pundits giving their views on the speech).

Well, if you were indeed looking to be "queen wannabe" and young girls will be looking up to you as mentor "queen wannabe" you might as well act the part and show your poised and class

First off, this was a week ago, so this is a little late.

And secondly, it's not to be taken seriously. This article captures the spirit of the event:

Globe'n'Mail: when political theatre goes vaudeville

"Dear diary, oh my God. Oh my God! So, like, [former Ontario premier] David [Peterson] called and he said that Belinda is like totally thinking of crossing over. And I'm like, 'no way.' And he's like 'yes way,' and I'm like 'no way!' I said to him, 'you'd better not be joking,' and he was like, 'I'm totally not,' " Mr. Martin told the black-tie crowd.
"I see a lot of new faces in the audience tonight. Of course they're mostly my staff," the Conservative Leader said when it was his turn at the podium. "Actually, I am really excited to be here. This is how I look when I'm excited. I'm probably the only person in the room who actually looks like his passport photo. As you know, I did the barbecue circuit this summer. We called it the summer of love handles."

But, despite depicting himself as colorless, Mr. Harper managed a dead-on impression of Revenue Minister John McCallum that had the audience in stitches.

Then there was NDP Leader Jack Layton who provided what some said was the funniest offering of the night, taking up the guitar to sing a few folk songs about his willingness to prop up the Liberals, the first to the tune of Trailers For Sale Or Rent.

"Party for sale or rent, will support any government," he crooned. "No principles, no guts, no spine. No tape recorders when we dine. Make us an offer we can't refuse, anything to get me in the news. You need bills approved so let's move, make me a deal."

"Peter Newman: Go (expletive) yourself," he said, retaining the solemn air of a former prime minister. "Thank you. Good night."

Nothing to worry about. Just people having a little fun. They'll give you lots of real material to complain about soon enough; no need to go off on their comedy stylings.

When I saw those numbers on the tables in the video, I felt ill. If it were just lame humour, I suppose I could live with it. But the problem goes well beyond that. Ottawa is a one-company town that exists in a parallel universe.

Gilles Duceppe doesn't go to those things. That should tell you something about this country.

hat is F*cking pathetic! She is supposed to be a leader in Canada and makes a complete ass of herself! It's makes me sick that our tax dollars pay that idiot!!! (Thanks for bringing that up August) She needs to be shot with a ball of her own shit!

We need to clean up Ottawa! Get rid of all this dead weight!

(Should I bring up Ralph Klein's three-sheets-to-the-wind interview and victory speech following the 2001 election here? Nah. Oh wait: I just did.)

Duceppe's "Not going to these affairs" does indeed tell us something about this country, August. It tells us that a Quebec politician who may hold the balance of power in this country does not have to care about what the media in most of the country since a majority of Quebeckers will support and elect him.

They will do that so long as he continues in his resolve to destroy the country. It tells us that we should ban parties whose purpose is not to uphold the Canadian Constitution and to deal severely with those who leach off Canadian taxpayers in order to break up the country of those taxpayers.

In other word, instore a dictatorship ? don't worry, the liberals are in the good path to acheive that.

What a great idea Eureka, but now you're attracting the defenders of the Charter, the Supreme Court Justices, who were themselves appointed to their jobs, at the public trouth. Ha. Ha!. No kidding though I think that is a great idea. If Quebec wants to continue sending politicians to Ottawa who's sole purpose is the break-up of Canada, then the people of Quebec should bear the expenses for these separtist's not the rest of Canada.

Does/will the PQ gov't fund groups that support the partition of Quebec after a yes vote? If no does that mean he PQ wants a dictorship?
I would think that Quebec will not want anything to do with the petitioning of Quebec by those who want to remain part of Canada, specifically the people of Northern Quebec, namely the aboriginal people, and it will be the responsibility of the Canadian Government and the Canadian military if necessary to protect the rights of those Canadian's.

Such a scenario would require the immediate replacement of ALL politician's from the Province of Quebec, since they would not only no longer be Canadian, but the seats they now occupy in the House of Commons would no longer exist, since Quebec would no longer be part of Canada. It would interesting to see just what kind of spin Paul Martin might want to put on such a scenario in order to remain in power. The loss of him and his family would be no loss to Canada since most of the family's assets are foreighn registered to avoid paying taxes in Canada. Taxes I might add that funds the social safety net that Paul Martin himself professes to hold sacred. Too bad he and his family shows so little financial committment to this country.

In fact, any government that choose what party can exist or not, become at a point a dictatorship or a violent states. Before the PQ, there was a form of terrorism in quebec to manifest the rage. I can't imagine a relativly peacefull relation like canada-quebec if sovreignist party where banned.

Quebec participate like all other provinces to pay the federal politician therefore they can choose whoever they want at an election, i think its false to say like if it was the rest of canada that was paying the bloc expense.

It is not dictatorship to outlaw what is tantamount to sedition. The PQ border on actual sedition all the time: some do cross the line but are not charged only because they are Francophone Quebeckers.

The moneys that Quebec contributed towards the payment of MPs is from federal taxes. Those taxes are paid for the purpose of governing Canada. That is not meant to support the obstruction of government and the promotion of secession. The Bloc are parasites who serve no useful puepose. They distort the political process and make governing Canada even more difficult than the unweildy distribution of powers makes it.

Incidentally, in reference to the "holier-than-thou" pose of both the Bloc and the PQ, the Government of Quebec and the PQ has spent vast amounts of money over the years on pure propaganda. That includes many, many millions of dollars to ad agencies. Huge sums under Pequiste regimes.

The total amount would make Adscam look the raid on a piggy bank. And, it is not to be questioned since it is merely promoting separation or the "promotion" of French.

I couldn't agree more,

Let's start with the Conservative Alliance,

Move on to the NDP,

and finally the BQ

We'll let the Indies stay so we have someone to argue with.

I found it embarrassing, until Kimmy claimed that it was a roast (her link was registration only - and I was too lazy to use BugmeNot to get around the registration). I'll take her word for it when she said it was the same event where they used self-deprecating humor to mock themselves.

I never knew that Layton could be so funny.

I, grudgingly, have to give him credit for that.
