Liberal sleaze continues in opposition

Recommended Posts

What, Gagliano wasn't bad enough? Joe Valeri and his sweetheart land flips weren't profitable enough? Now we've got Joe Volpe as the new champion of Liberal sleaze?

Volpe gets around election expense rules against campaign contributions from corporations by having the several members of a pharmaceutical company and their wives, and their underage children all donating the $5400 maximum to his leadership campaign, and he doesn't see anything wrong with that. The Liberal party doesn't see anything wrong with that either. From all appearances their leaders, including Bill Graham, are blinking wide, astonished eyes that anyone would even question this kind of thing - apparently routine in the Liberal Party. So almost all the money Volpe has raised so far has come from a single pharmaceutical company. I wonder what they've been promised in exchange.

Meanwhile, we see that Volpe's former cabinet position as immigration minister has come in handy. Fellow Toronto Liberal Roy Cullen just lost control of his riding association. He says in a Volpe arranged coup 125 people, mostly Sikhs, marched into the riding association's annual meeting, bought memberships, and immediately voted out the entire riding executive in favour of Sikhs who would support Volpe in the leadership race.

This is the guy who wants to be prime minister. This is the party that says they're clean and pure.

Isn't Joe also a big supporter of the Tamil Tigers?

$1000 will be the new limit though right? Case closed, problem solved. $1000 from 20 underage children don't really effect a campaign that costs $3 or 4 mil to run.

It's all about controls, make the law so that even bending it yields limited results.

i agree this thread is full of things we do not want on this site, but thay are slimely liberals, not the facts that make them slimey. I find it very interesting you say but they paid it back so its ok, as we all know not only is it not ok but if we really did have justice in this we would see people facing the courts for assisting in a fraud.

I guess that is why I just can not stomach any liberal in the system right now. Very few people have forgot what they did and I do not believe we will see them have any support after the next election. This will be one minority government that is going to last a long time, because thwe conditions are never going to be ripe for the liberal for the next 2 decades.

No liberals in the system?

like the two tory seats?

Slim minority... after all that was uncovered about the few that were involved in Adscam? THATS pathetic, my money says we're back to a Liberal majority within 4 years. Big jumps in support against a party with no leader... wow. Enjoy your time.

The money was returned? Then why the lawsuit to retrieve further money stolen from taxpayers?

And don't think that we're stupid enough to be content with a few sacrificial lambs.

I tend to agree with you, Shakey. I don't know why Argus decided to single out Italians. It seems to me that Dingwall, Brault and Chretien are not exactly Italian names. When a cow puts its head in the feed trough, it hardly matters whether it has brown spots or black spots.

There is a hilarious web site: http://www.youthforvolpe.ca/ that Paul Wells has noted.

On a related note, I'm beginning to think that the Internet somehow shows up the glibness and emptiness of the Liberals. TV allows the glib and empty to appear intelligent. The Internet is a more direct medium. Dunno.

Non issue? The money was returned? The issue is the corruption of the soul of the Liberal Party and most of its key members. Volpe's money laundering scheme, using children, no-less, doesn't say as much about what being a Liberal is like as the casual acceptance of it by the party. No one cared, the leaders said everything was fine and dandy, that that was the way Liberals are expected to act. And him reluctantly, resentfully, sulkily "giving the money back" after getting caught, after days of controversy and abuse, is no excuse.

Volpe is a sleaze. So are most of the others in the race. The party itself is rotten to the core.

There was a funny website going around, but look at this they had it shut dow. I wonder on what basis it was shut down, talk about suppressing freedom of speech.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...PStory/National

Early yesterday, the website address was flying into the inboxes of politicians, political staffers, journalists and even the strategists from other leadership campaigns.

Mr. Volpe's campaign had the site shut down without knowing, it seems, who put it up: "Hi Everyone," wrote Brenden Johnstone, who is with the Volpe campaign, in an e-mail to other leadership campaigns. "There has been concern about how the issue of the Volpe donations was reflecting on the leadership race.

"My Office has had the website suspended through CIRA [Canadian Internet Registration Authority] and CDNS [Canadian Domain Name Services] and it will be down as soon as 6 p.m. I think the issue with the website has been dealt with. . . ."

I thought the site went down because of bandwidth problems.

So, Volpe's campaign had the site shut down. Isn't that, like, censorship? On what authority did they do that? It wasn't libellous as far as I could see. It was good parody, with good graphics. Pictures of kids saying how happy they were to give up their toys so that they could contribute to Volpe's campaign. And a link to this CTV article.

If Volpe went to the trouble of having the site shut down, then I'm more convinced that teh Liberals just don't get the Internet.

I just heard on Rutherford that the site wasn't shut down by the liberals, the site has an actual address of Belleville city hall in the spoof, which is illegal.

It is exactly like censorship, and an abuse of power.

Is there any indication that Volpe knew that some of his campaign donations came from minors?

I think that is an assumption being treated as fact by the poster, which is in itself quite sleazey

And why would the poster single out a nationality? That is quite bizarre and speaks to a character.

Get real. These drug donations represented about 90% of all the donations he'd gotten. Don't tell me Volpe didn't realize how the company had spread them out among its senior staff and their familes. You think someone donates five grand to Volpe and he doesn't know exactly who it is and why?

As for Italian, I just threw it in because every time I hear about a Liberal politician who's Italian it's over a corruption issue. Which seems kinda wierd.

...and it isn't just Volpe bending the rules.

Liberals can't get ship to sail straight

A review of financial filings for the other Liberal leadership candidates shows many of the campaigns getting around donation restrictions through a loophole that allows them to accept hefty loans, even from execs in big business.

Stephane Dion: A single $200,000 loan from a Montreal businessman.

Scott Brison: Four loans of $50,000 apiece from Nova Scotia business titans.

Gerard Kennedy: Three loans from relatives (all adults) totaling $100,000.

Michael Ignatieff: Two loans totalling $125,000 from supporter Ian Davey.

Bob Rae: A single $100,000 loan from his brother John Rae, a senior executive of the giant Power Corporation.

Martha Hall Findlay: A $50,000 loan from herself -- at 6.5%.

Ken Dryden: Another self-loaner at $100,000.

While the loans are legal, Canadians might be excused for wondering whatever happened to the Liberals' own election financing reforms that were supposed limit contributions, cleansing our political system of even the appearance of undue influence being bought with big contributions?

My favorite part of this little buntoss was when Volpe claimed that the 11 year olds found one of his speeches 'compelling' and decided then and there to give him $5400.

That is hilarious and profoundly insulting at the same time.

Ya think? Or is it just that you only open your ears when you hear about corruption and Italians.

And btw, I think you're lumping some Italians into this who weren't even members of the party. You need hang onto your credibility a little more carefully.

And again....the accusation you're making is that he knew the donations were coming from kids. No proof.

And if he did know it, no rule against it.

Rightwingers are so desperate to drag up more supposed Liberal corruption that they're inventing it. I guess watching your leader implode will do that to you.
