Example #1. In case you have forgotten Warren Kinsella and the way he belittled Stockwell Day's faith on national television with a Barney the Dinosaur doll. Jean Chretien did not object to this stunt. Neither did any member's of Chretien's cabinet or the executive of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Fundamentalist Christians don't fit in with the Liberal Party of Canada's views. That is why it was ok for a special assistant to the Prime Minister to make a mockery of Stockwell Day's faith on national television without fear of reprisal.

Is that good enough for a start?

Yep, have to give you one there except the fact that you cannot tar the whole Liberal party for it silent or not. But it was a no-no and he should have been slapped down off lens.

I can agree that most people in this country, Liberals or otherwise, including Conservatives, are not fundamental Christians. As much as I disagree with fundys of any religion as they are not progressive in any way except what's convenient to them (hypocrisies abound) I agree with their right to their beliefs and to make public that belief. But, as the world is, they shouldn't be surprised to find themselves the butt of jokes and ridicule (however much I disagree with that as well) when they do.

As an add-on to your comment though, about other Libs not speaking out? - well a die-hard Con really shouldn't be too vocal about the speaking out part since the last Con to speak out against his party is now on a Liberal bench.

Off lens? Why shouldn't the party have publicly condemned what Kinsella said?

Why separate fundamentalist Christians? It is still Christianity. Also, most people in this country aren't Muslims.

But I guarantee you had Kinsella's comments been directed at Islam, the reprisal from the Liberals would have been swift. And on lens!

the last Con to speak out against his party is now on a Liberal bench.

Were your referring to Garth Turner with that last little piece? Garth is a nightmare. Good riddance to bad trash.

Garth was booted for being a royal pain in the arse and breaching caucus confidentiality. Had a Liberal done the same Dion would have turfed him...

Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Longhouse ... I don't care ... they are religions ... things you believe ... but when they start trying to explain away the natural world where it doesn't agree with their beliefs and IMPOSE that on others ... well ... it does become laughable.

That is a big *and*. Your response is quite bigotted without that and.

Day didn't try and impose his beliefs on others.

He has been attacked on this thread for honouring the sabbath and his privately held views.

Yet again, proving the point that liberals in Canada support the rights guaranteed by the Charter only when they are convenient.

Have any of Days' "pseudo- scientific" beliefs effected his performance as a Minister?

I doubt the portfolios he has can be affected. As long as they build a fire wall around eductation and any ministry that uses modern science so he can't do any harm, we should be okay.

It's funny that the left wing people end that belief when it comes to those with Christian beliefs. How completely hypocritical.

What does that mean?

It's too bad Canadians aren't tolerant enough to accept Day, he has been, without a doubt and regarded from all parties, one of the most professional cabinet ministers of this administration.

I'm tolerant enough no to care if he's School Crossing Guard or Public Safety Minister......I still wouldn't let him near a curriculum planner.....

The Niagara river flows North. Were you aware of that tough guy?

Oh I know which way the Niagara river flows, and which way the Niagara falls go too.

Day wasn't in the 2000 campaign.

Day was first elected to Ottawa in 2000. Are you unaware of that, rough guy?

Yah and ditto to you Cons when it serves your purpose.

Actually, Harper said he does not support the Charter at all, but prefers the "old Bill of Rights". He said that when asked why he didn't go to the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Charter, though he was found unoccupied with anything else. I thought that was quite revealing, esp re aboriginal rights.

While I disagree with making fun of someone's religion, I can't help but wonder what would happen if a politician believed that the earth was flat because of their religion?

All you have to do is look at what happened to Day when he commented on creationism, like wow, he was crucified (so to speak). Heck look at all the PMs who are RC and what they are supposed to believe in. e.g. virgin birth, transubstaniation, wine blood and all that... how much kookier can that get, but nobody ridicules them.
